Interview with Sumiko Shindou

Firstly for the first opening, "Kiiroi Bakansu" (Yellow Vacance), could you explain the backgrounds that lead to its creation?

Shindou

It's a song the director ordered me to make sound like a "youth song from the 70s". I feel like it's nostalgic for people in their 30s, including our production side, but something new for younger people.

Did you keep the voice actresses playing the characters in mind?

Shindou

I thought about "How should they sing it". Since both Himeko and Rei are singing the same song, I thought if we didn't add some variety, it would get boring. So, I thought, "how would this character interpret the lyrics?" In the case of bees are acting strange and coming towards, Himeko would see it as fun, as if saying "Yaaay, the cute bees are coming~!", while Rei would say "Oi oi, the bees are coming. Give me a break already." I got the feeling that Rei was singing lyrics that didn't suit to her personality.

Trick to Understand Kiiroi Bakansu with Tatsuya Oishi

It was our very first time, but thanks to Director’s ideas, the opening came out smoothly. It has a part where Becky’s enlarged enough to see her dot pattern and Ichijou appears there, which we did in reverse pattern (Number of Beckys increase enough to form one Ichijou) for the last opening Shoujo Q. One another thing that stays to the end is the toilet, which is a nod to Kiiroi Bakansu. You can tell the opening was made with the intention of “making something more amazing than anyone has done ever before”, and it could be said it has been the basis for our work ever since then.

Editor's comment: You can see Ichijou-san among the dots of enlarged Becky. If you remember this when watching Shoujo Q, it might deepen your interest even more.
