Good Things Come to He Who Waits

報は寝て

Script: Kenichi Kanemaki | Animation Director: Satoshi Iwataki | Storyboard: Hiroaki Nishimura | Director: O Odawara

Idiom Explanation

The meaning is that if you do everything you can, and then just patiently wait with no rush, good news will definitely come to you. It’s important to be able to wait for long whiles in order to get good fortune.

Hekiru Hikawa Check
Taeko is just plain cute! She’s not a SquEni character whatsoever. The ways she shrugs her shoulders and looks unhappy are outstanding.
Advanced Learning
1. Watch Out For the Skirt

As if in the same pitching style of Dai League **ll No. 2, Media throws Mesousa. Like a disappearing magic ball, Mesousa disappears into distance.

2. Crab Juice

In Himeko’s delusions, Miyako has the figure of a crab meat broth 100% juice can. It doesn’t sound tasty at all, but it’s admirable there exists something that she’s very particular about.

TL note: See Development Study below. Screenshot from the TV release, subtitled by Oyasumi.

3. Mushroom on Himeko

Once again, there’s a scene where a mushroom stands out in place of Himeko’s cowlick on her head. From now on, scenes with the mushroom growing will gradually increase.

4. Information Club’s Secret Meeting

Watanuki and her other club members are consulting how to expose Principal’s true identity. The (puppet) cat in the foreground is the leader of Information Club, who appears in the original work. People who are interested should read the manga volumes.

5. Stung by a Jellyfish

Mesousa got stung by a jellyfish that for some reason was in a river. In the literary manga Ne**shiki, there appears a me*usa, but here, it’s Mesousa.

TL note: In this manga, the jellyfish is called “XX kurage” (XXクラゲ), which Japanese misread as ”meme kurage” (メメクラゲ). Originally the joke introduced the jellyfish as ”me**kurage”, which in turn would be here “mesokurage”.

6. ”My skirt!”

While the Information Club is escaping, Miyata falls and Watanuki has to drag her with a rope. While the Information Club is escaping, Miyata falls and Watanuki has to drag her with a rope. But, what ends up being left behind is...

7. Encore For Ichijou Festival

Aliens collect Ichijou Festival by transferring it to their ship, and inside, there’s Ichijou’s little sister! After this the little sister returns down to Earth, but Ichijou Festival doesn’t appear for a while. It was unimaginable how things turned out to be in Episode 25...

8. Rei In the Middle of Her Part-Time Job

Rei, who’s part-time job is at Momoka Restaurant, is in the middle of working. Her outfit is the same one as the one appearing in Episode 12’s dream world, but this will be the first time it’s shown in reality. She doesn’t wear her glasses, because that way she can do a part-time job and won’t be caught by her school, which make her clothes kind of a disguise of sort.

9. As Expected, Media Shows No Forgiveness

Serizawa, who rages for being dressed up as Mesousa, is silenced by Media with a single piercing strike. Caving into the costume this much, won’t the center of Serizawa’s face be caved in as well...? In any case, Media’s on the black side in this episode.

10. Sergeant Hart**n Passing Through

It’s once again the sergeant that appeared way back in Episode 14. In this episode, during Ichijou’s and Mesousa’s discussion scene, mixed alongside letters of “man”, “woman” and “child”, there’s the Sergeant’s name. “HG” as well, but that’s probably related to the comedian known from “Foo!”.

11. Posters Around the Town

Not only in this scene, for some reason throughout Momotsuki Town, which appears here in Episode 18, many posters from the 60s have been pasted all over, such as Bo* Curry, Oro**min C and other. Is this the only episode where time and space warp?

12. Meanwhile

While the story continues focused in Momotsuki Town, Miyamoto’s Research Room is repeatedly conducting tests of defusing a bomb and exploding after failures. Speaking of “Bombs require Rangers”, Food Rangers, Specially Selected Five, who appeared in Episode 15, make an appearance once again.

13. Etoile’s Menu

Café Etoile, where Kurumi works part-time, has a Moe Menu. But since Kurumi, who works as a waitress there, has no redeeming moe features, the menu looks like a plan for a moe café that fell through.

14. Inside Café Etoile

The cause why Kurumi is plain remains unknown, but for some reason everything has been turned to monochrome inside Etoile. It’s no “moe”, but wouldn’t this stylish atmosphere help the sales? By the way, in the back, there’s also the same kappa as in MaroMayu.

15. Results Report

Since she’s a jinx trainee, she reports to Lord Cat all accomplishments in bringing unhappiness to people. It’d be fascinating to know about the relationship between these two, but as for now, the big explosion was “overdone”.

16. Mysterious Man

A mysterious man, who is thought to have handed the bomb over to Taeko-chan, appears in the C part. His appearance could be guessed to be Robot *****tive, but in actually it’s based on the images of enemy characters that appear in Babe* II’s ending. It’s more than likely that there aren’t many people who realised it’s not a character by Ishi**mori, but by Yoko****.

Development Study

Beware the Red Shells

Beneath Miyamoto Research Room’s floor, characters reminiscent of Mario Kar* DS run past one after another.

Crab Juice Miyako

Miyako previously had only eyes and glasses in this scene, but now she has a face. However, she’s still crab juice nonetheless.

Panipo

On lower right, there’s a neon sign with a name similar to a famous candy maker. Its hair looks for some reason like Sune*’s.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

”Occassionally I want to have her wear child-like clothes, so now I made her look like this”. The ribbons used to tie her hair are meant to give out an image of “thick yarns”.

Kurumi's Story Guide

At some point, a time point had been implanted into Mesousa’s body. Just how didn’t she notice something like that... While there’s still 3 hours until the detonation, Becky and her group started researching for a method to defuse the bomb, and Mesousa herself looks to have gone looking for this Taeko-chan girl. Apparently, she’s a jinx in training, and seems like she gave Mesousa misfortune by planting the bomb on her. Can’t believe Mesousa would have any happiness in the first place. Anyways, going by that girl’s description, I believe she’s at the café where I work part-time...

Voices from our Staff

Satoshi Iwataki

(Animation Director, Keyframes - 42 yo)

Since Episode 18 was the first time I participated with the team, I had a hard time making the characters look like themselves. Anyhow, I desperately tried to make Taeko cute.

Nobuyuki Kurashige

(Planning Co-operation)

This is an episode where you can enjoy various scenery together with wandering Mesousa. In the dusk, the town creates a fragrance of Showa Era through enameled signboards, and in the city at night, the cherry on top is a monochrome café! While the visual allure is wonderful, Mesousa (& Serizawa) are just too pitiful. Sorry but they gave me the biggest laughs.

Director’s Point of View

O Odawara

(Director - 43 yo)

With many and various signboards on street corners, I tried giving the city a special retro atmosphere. I wonder what movie does the scene where Lord Cat flies through the sky and crashes into an electric sign parody of.

Iguyo

Nanjo’s pet. It’s believed to be a green iguana that lives in the American continent. It’s quite reticent.

Suzune Shiratori (Casual clothes)

After going to see a movie with Otome. If she kept quiet, she’d seem very much like an adult.

Otome Akiyama (Casual clothes)

Her appearance when she was with Suzune. She has such a boyish fashion style.

Lord Cat (Cape figure)

For some reason Lord Cat is black. Maybe because of the jinx, he’s black too?

Yuuna Kashiwagi (Casual clothes)

Clothes she wore during her audition. Compared to her big sister, she has a little calmer atmosphere.

Yuuma Kashiwagi (Casual clothes)

Miniskirt makes it a pretty bold outfit. She has a great passion for fashion.

An otaku manager. He runs a café that doesn’t make any profit at all.

Look Back to Episode 18

In relation to The Way of Writing Pani Poni Dash! interview

Kanemaki There was an order from the Director that he wanted to do an episode about MaroMayu, and Himeko would’ve had the lead role. At the same time, there hadn’t been any episode that particularly focused on Mesousa, so we decided to have Mesousa as a guest star, whom Taeko would follow throughout the episode. The opening scene was really nice. Two truly unfortunate people surrounded by a beautiful background scenery (laughs).

-Where the idea for the bomb being on Mesousa come from?

Kanemaki I thought that anything occurring to Mesousa, be it as simple as her just moving, would be a symbol of unhappiness.

Shinbo Pani Poni and bombs, they go hand-in-hand pretty well (laughs).
