Endure Patiently and You Will Not Wilt

Script: Sumio Uetake | Animation Director: Noboru Jitsuhara | Storyboard & Director: Yasuo Ejima

Idiom Explanation

Have firm intentions, bear it patiently, and don’t let your mind be swayed. People often talk about “the spirit of persistence” (堅忍不抜の精神), but in order to accomplish great deeds, you need to achieve this level of resolution.

Hekiru Hikawa Check
In both direction and script, the episode had a unique feel to it. Collaboration also shines, as Class C is above all in their biggest pinch yet! Specially Selected Five! too is a must-watch.
Advanced Learning
1. Chopsticks Animation

In the scenes that reminiscent about the beginning of the story and the busjack in midway, there appears pictures of characters are drawn on to paper and attached to splittable chopsticks which are moved to create the feel of animation. This is a technique that was used in the self-parody short film that was screened alongside the third theatrical release of an anime about the activities of a metropolitan police department and their team who fight against La**r Crimes. Making the original short movie took a lot of effort, and that shows, as seen here. So keep your eyes out, since this might be the only time you’ll see this style. If you felt that “I’ve been bamboozled!” after this, we don’t accept any complaints.

2. Idol Unit Formation!?

The two who serve as main vocalists for the 2nd opening Roulette☆Roulette are Ichijou and Kurumi. Therefore both of them started their live performance inside the bus! Spotlight illuminates upon Ichijou, but it doesn’t reach Kurumi, which is often the case. After all, it can’t be helped that she’s plain.

3. Even Now It Looks About to Collapse...

Only the tip of the cliff, where the bus is stuck, has an unnatural change in colour. In cel animation, before current times where digital has become mainstream, cels about “this spot will collapse next” were drawn only for the purpose of adding in necessary movement, and those spots would often be in different colour from the rest of the background. It brings back memories of those nostalgic times; the director of this episode is very thoughtful.

4. Completion of Super Himeko Theory

Himeko is desperately doing her best to not let the bus fall off the cliff. It seems like the balance is maintained with maho power and solar energy, but understanding it is impossible.

5. Please give me your lives!!

In the adventure manga about searching for seven balls, this is a phrase that’s known as the protagonist’s catchphrase. Mysteriously using it when he’s exhauster, the line gives him more energy.

6. Recklessly Running Truck of Horror

In the movie Du** by Director Spiel**rg, the passenger car driven by the protagonist is being persistently pursued by a large tanker trunk. That horror is duplicated here.

7. Nostalgic TV Game Mass Gathering

The bus carrying Class C drives around, trying to run away from the large trunk. Anywhere they go, there’s a lot of scenery resembling screens of famous games. From an action game where brothers with moustaches pass through big pipes, to a horizontal-scrolling shooter where gigantic girls (which is Igarashi-sensei!) appear, how many do you recognize?

8. Mesousa Fight

4-koma version that’s the same in the original work too. This time when Class C is not around, Mesousa is in the leading role (although all alone).

9. Miraculous Survival

“It is with much embarrassment that I have returned alive” was the famous comment said by the former Japanese soldier Shoichi Yokoi, who was found at Guam in 1972, upon returning to Japan. From Himeko, it’s a socially aware (?) joke.

10. Five People Who Were Sent To Action

Robousa launches from the diorama, which was created by the head of Momotsuki Academy’s Model Club, Makoto Okamoto. This set resembles a lot the one, which appears in the first installment of a certain tokusatsu program series, where five heroes fight each other.

11. Change! Robousa!!

The insides of Robousa’s mouth show for an instant Kiriusa’s figure. He is wearing a red helmet which somehow looks like something from the hero show Denjin Za**rger, where the main hero controls a robot that changes into a bike. Even so, it doesn’t mean Robousa can change at all, which is a pity.

12. Speaking of Gu~Gu...

As the stomach grumbles onomatopoetically as “gu~gu~”, a fat chicken-looking creature passes through the screen. That thing’s peculiar way of speech has made it a classic when it comes to imitating.

13. If Gold, There's 1, If Silver, There's 5

Chocolate with peanuts that can give you something special if you win. They’re one of the must-need items for excursions.

14. Pray

In the variety show Oretachi Chih**ukin-zoku, which was all the craze in the 80s, there was a segment where directors and staff members, who made mistakes in the episode, would enter a confessional at the end part, and if they made God give them out an X due to insufficient remorse, He would pour water on them. But in this case, Himeko didn’t seem to do anything wrong...

15. Wha, What’s that!!

Suddenly Watanuki makes a serious face and starts giving a passionate speech. Her tone is similar to the leader of a certain mystery investigation team who explain the secrets hidden in the Nostradamus prophecies. Basically, what she’s saying is pretty absurd.

16. Aboveground And Underground Are All Wro~ng!!

A comedian who became a huge hit during this anime’s broadcasting appears in the schoolyard as turned into a statue. Looking closer to this screen, the figures of other characters have also become different underground from aboveground counterparts. It’s suddenly a real mystery!?

17. Paper Bag of Sorrow

The reaction Kurumi makes after receiving harsh words from Rei, is putting a paper bag with “moe” written on it over her head. In the manga Maromayu as well, Kurumi is forced to wear this paper bag.

18. Himeko’s Pro Debut!?

In this episode, story progressed like turning the pages of a magazine, and in the final cut, words “Please look forward to Miss Himeko Katagiri’s next masterpiece” are seen. When did she become a professional manga artist? The new serialization mentioned on the side seems pretty interesting as well.

Development Study

Animal Academy

In the scene showing Class D’s mob characters, all the ordinary students that were there have been turned into animals. You might already expect just who’s pets these are.

Increase of Itou-sans

The number of Itou-sans in Class B is amazing. But even though there’s nothing to do while waiting, there’s no need to increase their number.

Look Back to Episode 15

In relation to The Way of Writing Pani Poni Dash! interview

Kanemaki It’s rare for an episode to have its basis in the original manga.

Uetake I did a lot of things, but first of all, I wanted to have a song for the episode.

Kanemaki I was wondering what to do with the song that would be performed at buses, but Himeko’s voice actress Fumiko Orikasa did a great job. It also felt like the Director was having fun here.

Uetake The scene where fire was extinguished by cutting it into pieces was funny.

Takayama Robousa 2 made its appearance as well.

Kanemaki It was pretty memorable how Mesousa was left behind. And played King’s Game all by himself (laughs).

Miyako’s Story Guide

It's me, Miyako... Crisis... Today is Momotsuki Academy’s field day... A critical moment... We first-year students boarded on buses in groups of one class and set off... In an emergency... And then a lot happened to our Class C bus, and we ended up in an unnerving situation, where we’re currently about to drop off to a rock bottom... Dying... If the balance were to disrupt, we’d fall off immediately, so we can’t move nearly at all inside the bus... Nightmare... Aargh, just how did we end up like this!

Voices from our Staff

Sumio Uetake

(Thirty-year-old Scriptwriter)

The side story here was Miyako with her English word flashcards. Searching words online didn’t work for me, so I ended up going to a book store and buying several Japanese-English dictionaries. For C part, where Food Rangers! Specially Selected Five! appears again, I created them background information, character profiles, backstories, relationships, special skills and weak points, which I submitted to the Director. Even though we aren’t going to use that stuff at all (laughs).

Direction Highlight

Yasuo Ejima

(Direction, Storyboard, In his 30s)

I included and drew so many ideas on the storyboarding stage that I wrote a note “If I went too overboard, feel free to remove things” when sending the script forward, but they came to use the script as it was. I drew the low angle shots of Kurumi and Ichijou at the introductory stage while watching Pre*ure...

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

“As excursion was the theme, I thought up clothes where moving would be easy”. The three-dimensional cutting of bootcut jeans have also skilled stitching.

Episode 15 Setup Collection

(Click to enlarge, opens to a new windows)

Kurumi (Idol clothes)

It seems she’s giving up being plain with a frilly idol-like costume. But she isn’t winning Ichijou with that (laughs).

Ichijou (Kimono)

Enka is Japan’s soul, which is why she appears dressed in a kimono, even though she’s not going to sing enka. That’s some amazing determination.

Igarashi-sensei (Casual)

She was on the duty of leading her class during the excursion while hungover, and collapsed due to car sickness. Does her dressing up stylishly really have no point!?

Robousa

Becky called it through the wrist watch -looking communicator she got from Nanjo. Needless to say, it’s pretty useless.

Misao Nanjo (Casual)

She’s the only one who participates a school event like an excursion in casual clothes. Ojou-sama-like clothes made her stand out in the school yard.

Busjack Culprit

He who got ridiculed by Becky, and finally got caught by Ichijou. His luck ran out once he boarded Class C’s bus.

Akane Serizawa (Peo**-kun)

Kigurumi that resembles a mascot character for Metropolitan Police. It regularly speaks the phrase “de arimasu” at the end of a sentence.

Bus

It’s a bus commonly used on excursions, and it hasn’t been altered at all, but it has robustness to bear with it on an edge of a cliff.

Food Rangers! Specially Selected Five!

From left, Corn Yellow, Sekisaba Mackerel Blue, Crab Red, Aspara Green, and Porky Pink. They’re strong and scrumptious.

Huge Crab

Himeko commented it by saying “I can’t eat that much”. By Ichijou’s little sister’s persuasion (?), it returned to sea.
