There Are No Classes Among Humans, But There Are In Humans' Hearts

に高下なし, に高下ありを

Script: Katsuhiko Takayama | Animation Director: Haruo Oogawara | Storyboard: Shouji Saeki | Director: Hiroaki Nishimura

Idiom Explanation

No human is higher or lower than one another, meaning, there’s no superiority or inferiority, but equality. However, there’s hierarchy in attitudes and personalities. It means that the most important thing in humans is the heart.

Hekiru Hikawa Check
Dreams! Michael! No matter how you look at it, ordinary Becky is cute. Rei dressing up in Chinese clothes with other fan service gives the dreamworld full marks. And everyone’s lethal moves are must-see!?
Advanced Learning
1. Michael’s Appearance for an Instant

In the middle of Rei speaking about dreams and such, just one single cut of Michael appears on screen. Is this foreshadowing?

2. Orelingual

This item, which is said to be capable of reading other person’s mind, is from Galaxy Mail Order, and was purchased by the Captain through Galaxy COD. Even on Earth, it’s impossible to understand human heart, but there exist toys which can translate what a dog is thinking from its barks.

3. Inside Himeko’s Dream

Maho here and Mahoge there, it’s a world filled to brim with lots and lots of unclear meanings. It’s very Himeko-like, but is it okay for a high schooler to have dreams like this?

4. Eyecatch

In this episode’s eyecatcher, there’s a hidden joke in it. Becky points at her teeth while doing a circle with her hands (pa), smiles with a grin (ni), hits the palm of her hand with a pow (po), smiles with a grin again (ni), and lastly makes the gesture of running (dash). With all connected, you get “Pani Poni Dash!” Well, how many of you did notice it?

TL's note: Teeth in Japanese are "ha", and by adding the handakuten circle, you get "pa". Smile/grin starts in Japanese with a "ni". The onomatopoetic sound of fist hitting in Japanese is "pon", which I tried to replicate with English "pow". And "dash" as Becky dashes off.

5. What’s With This Door?

The door No. 6 found looks at first glance like a certain cat-modeled robot’s Any***re Door, but that’s not only it. With the thinly hanging “CLOSE” sign, doesn’t this remind some people of an old drama show that starred a detective?

6. As For Behoimi...

Behoimi has appeared several times up to this point, but this time around, her wipe videos are a bit strange. Covered with mosaics and silhouette, don’t you just feel sorry for her?

7. The Battle Has Ended...

Michael resembles one teacher from that theatrical manga. By the way, “******* Goddess” is the legendary role that only the best actresses can play. Existing only inside this manga-lover’s dreams, is Himeko familiar with Michael too?

8. Principal’s Mask at the Restaurant

At the restaurant inside the dream, the mask of Momotsuki Academy’s Principal has been placed there. Himeko apparently registered Shu as a person who cooks, but as for, it seems like she registers him only as a person who wears a mask.

9. Tigers Melting Into Butter

Three tigers circle around the center of a palm tree inside a butter pack. This is a quotation from the children’s story The Story of Little Black Sambo. Sambo is a boy’s name. It’s a story about how four tigers snatch his shoes, shirt, umbrella and pants (the ones Mesousa wear in the next scene), but then get into a fight and end up turning into butter as they chase each other by the tail. By the way, the number of pancakes cooked with that butter was the same “169” that Lord Cat said. “The Story of Little Black Sambo” was out of print for a while because it contained discriminatory language against black people, so it’s a missing link in the line of fairy tales, and certain generations may not know it.

10. Ichijou’s Water Show

Ichijou is performing her water sjpw in front of a background that has three things which are said to be good things to see in the first dream of the year. As the common saying goes, “First Fuji, Second Hawk, Third Eggplant”, it’s a great omen to see them in this order. Combined with the customary water show of New Year’s special programs, this somehow feels like the morning of first day of a new year.

11. Kurumi’s Beam

As you can tell from her pose, the beam Kurumi is launching is S**cium Beam. The background has also been changed to look like a cityscape setting.

12. Boob Missiles

Even now, ”Boob missile” is a gag that’s in common use, but it’s origins lie in the female robot of Mazi*ger Z, Af**fite A. Incidentally, the scene playing missiles flying and trailing smoke, is a way of portraying a battle sequence which was invented by the genius animator Ichirō Itano, who’s nicknamed as “Itano Circus”.

13. Skull Cloud

Michael suffers from Kurumi’s, Miyako’s and Rei’s attacks, and finally explodes in a huge blast. Every time the evil trio of the anime Time **kan are defeated, they go out in an explosion like this.

14. Ending

Genbu had no lines in the main story, but he’s greatly active in the ending! By taking off his shell, he dances **deki Saijō’s Y*UNG MAN. The lyrics go “When you’re young, you can do anything you want”, so perhaps they’re related to Becky’s words of support?

15. Attack of the Gigantic Bancho!?

This time the C part is structured like a preview for the next episode, and it’s something you might not expect. Fujiyama approaches, and Class C has to stand up against it! As it feels a bit like Godzi***, please look forward the next episode!

Development Study

The Story of Little Black Mesousa

Matching to The Story of Little Black **mbo where “tigers turn into butter by running in a circle” comes from, Mesousa’s body is also black.

Operation Yashima

Becky’s pose is similar to the one NE*V’s commander often has, and the corresponding operation name is displayed on the screen.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

“As ‘glasses’ was the theme, I tried to create a design for Becky with this image in mind”. The hairstyle and glasses match perfectly.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

”Since the location was inside a dream, I imagined it to have a light feeling”. Her fashion is energetic and it show in her hair style too.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

As the theme was ”a cat suit”, this is what I came up with. They’re full-body tights, which looks like really warm and cozy.

Episode 12 Setup Collection

Rei Tachibana (Chinese clothes)

Chinese clothes that Rei wears at her workplace. The slit and open back are sexy.

Kurumi Momose (Apron)

These too are work clothes. This is how she looks while working as an un-moe waitress at a coffee shop.

Miyako Uehara (Casual)

The chic top is paired with pink shoes, which leave a nice impression. Do you like subdued colours?

Igarashi-sensei (Casual)

Even if her appearance is brief, her clothes change every time. Igarashi-sensei (or rather Staff members) is particularly concerned over her clothing

Himeko Katagiri (Child)

Drawn with simplistic lines, her figure overflows a comfy and nostalgic feeling.

Michael

(Self-proclaimed) Archangel has a visual like this. Is this how Himeko imagines an angel...

Genbu

Drawn with simplistic lines, his figure overflows a sense of lethargy, which is how he was represented during the story.

Mesousa’s Story Guide

People often say “if you don’t have dreams, there’s no point in living”, but how that goes for rabbits? Setting that aside, even rabbits see dreams like humans when asleep (or is it just me?). For some reason, today everyone from Class C went together inside Himeko’s dreamworld. Just what on Earth made this happen? It bothers how this happened to me, but I’m also bothered about Himeko’s dreamworld, where’s a strange person called Michael, who calls himself an angel. Whatever the case, if this is a dream, I hope we’ll wake up soon~!

Voices from our Staff

Shouji Saeki

Storyboard

I’m overwhelmed with how full of energy the work place is. Every week an episode airs I go “So this reference got in~!”, which was what I thought about Episode 12. Michael was fun to draw, so I wanted to try doing more things with him. By the way, in Episode 13, Bancho’s nameplate on his school uniform is supposed to look like it was sewn on by his mother.

Hitoshi Hibino

30 yo, Colour Director, Special Effects

Every episode having characters’ clothes change makes my job difficult, but I enjoy choosing the colours. I especially want Becky to wear cute colours, which every time makes me worry about making her designs look not too similar!

Chalkboard and Telop Explanation

I don’t have a single regret in my life

These words were left by Raoh, the Saviour of Century’s End’s greatest and strongest enemy, but also senior disciple, at the moment of his death. Many people still hold respect for his magnificent death. To me, you were a great and strong enemy (friend).

Take it. Even if it means killing him

The pillow word for “Wha- What are you doing, you bastard”. It’s one choice in the first entry in the series of romancing games. “A kappa? Ha!”, “Butch** is 10 000 years old!” and such, the writing for this game’s dialogue is excellent.

A Z*ng for A*rith

(But I don’t have enough magic points!)

A scribble that combines two moves from two hit RPGs. If only I had used Z*ng (with enough MP, of course), I might’ve been able to bring A*rith back to life... or rather, did staff members write these lines to express their fleeting hope?

Oh, a new record!

In the world that had been engulfed in nuclear flames, this is a line from a villain who is entertained by the sport of throwing people in the sky and measuring the distance they could fly. Of course, he is defeated by the Saviour of Century’s End, but all petty villains of this world, even if they die miserably, have something they hold dear to them.

Press Command-Option-P-R!!

This is the reset command for PRAM (Parameter RAM) on Macintosh computers. PRAM is a type of computer memory that maintains date, time and other such information.

Didn’t bother to count past a hundred

From the same manga as the scribble before the previous one. When a character asks him “How many people have you killed so far?”, this is his answer. The way he says it so casually is cool. An admirable person, from a country where the survival rate of boys is 1%, has certainly something special to say.

Even breathing is cumbersome

This is the line of an arrogant (and actually an admirable) enemy from a world where word “enemy” is read as “friend”. In that world, it’s common knowledge that those who rise to power through money will be defeated by righteous justice, but in reality, punching a rich person will get you reported, so it’s strictly forbidden.

Sexy Commander

A martial artist who makes his enemies lose their guard by making foolish poses, and then attacking them. Since only the spin-off manga has been released, there were audible wishes for the main story to come out, but that seems to be not possible as long as Jaguar is blowing a flute.

It’s impossible to block Houyokusen

Related to a special move from a certain 2D masterpiece fighting game III. Even if in guard, your opponent’s super special move would completely wear you down and make you lose, but by counteracting (blocking) it all, and responding with this super special move, you can turn the table and achieve victory. This is considered as divine gameplay (kami-play).

Pipiru Pirupiru Pipiru

This is the magic spell chanted by an angel, whose light novel got turned into an OVA series. When the magic is activated, even the protagonist, who had been beaten to death, instantly comes back to life, which makes even adults tear up, just by imaging it.

Tsundere is the basic

Tsundere” is a type of moe character that combines a sharp attitude (tsuntsun) with a sweet side (deredere), and the primary way of enjoyment is to admire the gap between these personalities. According to experts, there are apparently more detailed classifications of the term tsundere.

Choriki Transformation

One particular super sentai series had a character who transformed with this chant. A certain celebrity playing as the pink heroine, and that one actor, whose name is a synonym to “a hero”, playing as the group leader, the cast is quite impressive.

Since 10,020 years ago

From the theme song of a mecha anime that was broadcasted in 2005 (although the name here seems a bit different compared to the original). Rikao-sensei’s attempts on explaining the logic behind anime’s special punches on its official site made it quite an interesting piece of work.

Strong

Simulation Attack!!

The commercial song of a simulation RPG that was well-received on Famicom and also on SuFami as a remake. If you get into peril, quickly run away, and almost drowned ones can face hardships. It’s a strangely catchy song.

ra**n bar’s chocolate chip flavor is very nasty

In the 1980s, when candies with bonus stickers was all the craze, a snack called ra**n bar, with stickers of masked wrestlers, was released. Regardless of stickers, just why would they manufacture it with chocolate chip flavour even though it has ra**n on its label.

Salmon are spawning!

This is a special move used by the dice-shaped doll, who, despite appearing on one Kanagawa’s local TV program, has spawned a core fanbase across the country. The move spits out salmon roe, which have healing effects. Other moves (watchwords?) are something like “God ***rior goes boom!” and “Fossa Magna!

Look Back to Episode 12

In relation to Pani Poni Education interview

Shinbo (Takahiro) Sakurai-san’s acting as Michael was amazing.

Takayama He performs every single word of his eccentric-feeling lines in a special way that got us in extremely high spirits.

Kanemaki Sakurai-san feels like a voice actor more fitting to play the protagonist, but he’s really skillful with dubbing absurd lines in just couple of days.

Takayama After the episode, we decided that we needed to bring Michael back for one more time, but writing lines for Michael is hard (laughs). Like, I’m writing them while bleeding (laughs).
