Even a Thoroughbred Has Its Habit

馬にあり

Script: Katsuhiko Takayama | Animation Director: Noboru Jitsuhara | Storyboard: Michio Fukuda | Director: Yasuo Ejima

Idiom Explanation

Horses that are called “thoroughbred” aren’t necessarily easy to handle. They have different habits, making them hard to ride on. This means that outstanding people have a strong individuality.

Hekiru Hikawa Check
Beho and Medi defusing a bomb! Unlike the original, it has a lot of details… all the technical terminology flying back and forth make it a pretty nice episode. I especially liked the rooftop scene at the end, for being so invigorating.
Advanced Learning
1. Kurumi, Whose Hair Grew

During summer holiday Kurumi’s hair grew. Of course, no one notices it. It’s always like this for her, but you can’t help but feel sorry.

2. Taeko in Rabbit Hutch

Kurumi secluded herself to the Rabbit hutch and nestled there with Taeko. In this episode too, a mixed choice of various characters makes their appearance on every screen, including Serizawa and Captain while jogging. With Dona*d and others, parody characters are here too.

3. Lots of Bombs

Look carefully on the designs of the boxes where time bombs are planted. One that has a logo with the same feel of a certain home computer brand, one that’s packed with a ribbon, and many many others.

4. Tan**-kun in the Screen Corner

On the side of Behoimi and Media panicking over the large amounts of timebombs, is that the extensively popular creature from *mi Shibata-sensei’s manga Papu*a?

5. Blurred Bomb

The internal structure of the time bomb is blurred with a mosaic because drawing it too more accurately would lead to troublesome imitations. Due to this same reason, Behoimi’s and Media’s explanations have been replaced with a beep. For people who want to know about it in detail, make sure there aren’t any lust murder perpetrators in your family or close relatives, and do the research on your own.

6. No. 6’s Observation Diary

Isn’t the screen for coloured chick’s observation game an obvious nod to all those popular raising games on cellphones? Up next comes “Schrodinger’s PIYOPIYO” on the screen, which refers to Schrödinger’s cat, where the cat in question has 50% chance of being alive, which is used to explain quantum mechanics. It’s impossible to explain it throughout here, so all people who want know it in detail can read a book specially about this topic.

7. Prelude to Destruction

On the box of the time bomb is the name of an ancient mecha anime’s last episode. The reason why the episode's called legendary is that even though it's the final episode, it's actually the first part of the finale.

8. 1:100 Scale Golden Pavillion

Whether a history nerd or I****-san fan, Miyako’s research project is full of her maniacal obsessions. By the way, the people who didn’t have their name replaced with a beep are real people. The ones who have their name as a beep are characters from the world of I****-san. Miyako doesn’t seem to all that good in studying, but maybe she got good grades in history, technology and home economics?

9. Kawanishi H8K

Giant Salamander’s handcrafted research project. This aircraft was developed during World War II and its formal name was a Type 2 Flying Boat. Its reciprocating engine Flying Boat is boasted as world’s best in the terms of performance.

10. Intermingling with the Staff

It seems like just the same staff members doing the filming and scenery as always, but Ichijou has sneaked off to the set to eat a bento. It looks like they’re in the middle of recording the scene, so doing something like that... Well, it’s probably alright since it’s Ichijou after all.

11. Again with the Shi**ru Mizuki style

With Becky’s danger having been avoided, everyone is glad. In the midst of it, Miyako’s face has a touch of ***geru Mizuki on it. Above her face is Ichijou with the hair ornament resembling an eyeball. Also, pay attention to the place where Ichijou’s youkai antenna is pointing.

12. Large Swarm of Pigeons Flying High

A flock of pigeons, which are considered as the symbol of peace. Many people may have been reminded of one nostalgic quiz show from the past. Speaking of, a similar-sounding song as Himeko’s “Mahoho” song could be often heard during this program.

13. Ending

An ending that will delight all the fans of the original work. Here flows Bucket Man and all Serizawa’s costumes that are yet to appear in the anime. Serizawa’s and Yuzuko’s fusion is also pretty funny.

14. Becky’s Granddaughter Appearing

She, who came to save “Grandma Rebecca”, has a costume similar to the boy who came from the future in a show that was broadcasted in 1965. It begs the question, what kind of a crisis Becky will face in near future, but that won’t be revealed until the final episode (of course).

Development Study

Bom-Ba-*e

Behind Kurumi, who curled herself up to the Rabbit Hutch, there’s a professional wrestler applying an octopus hold on another. He’s a man with a burning fighting spirit.

The Boxes for Bombs...

The huge box on the right is Family T**iner, a foot-operated controller for dance games. There’s a lot of boxes that look like related to old game consoles. Are these the treasure chests of retro nerds?

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

The content of the episode seemed a little serious, so to avoid a pushy design, I had her wear a refreshing striped outfit.

Episode 10 Setup Collection

Behoimi (Magical Girl)

A more magical girl -type design than before. But wouldn’t it be embarrassing going out in public wearing this?

Yuuma Kashiwagi (New Autumn Outfit)

With the hem of her skirt tied up, it comes out sexy. It’s understandable why Yuuna feels embarrassed.

Igarashi-sensei (Casual)

Although its design is calm, it being not plain is pretty amazing.

Ichijou (Mechanical Body)

Was this drawn by the Designer with AIB* designs in mind?

Becky’s Granddaughter

Futuristic suit with a futuristic gun. The costume emphasizes cuteness over coolness.

Look Back to Episode 10

In relation to Pani Poni Education interview

Kanemaki No matter how you look at it, I****-san is the same as he always is, which surprised me a lot (laughs).

Hikawa It’s pretty easy to recognize him from his chin.

Kanemaki When Miyako shouted ”Even Sa**-chan?”, there was a Sa**-chan drawn on the blackboard, but Miyako was in front of that and her face couldn’t be seen (laughs). Speaking of, what was that photo of Kawanishi H8K all about?

Shinbo Oh, that CG. It was intended to rotate, but it didn’t turn around that well.

Hikawa So it was a 3D model?

Kanemaki There’s always something strange going on (laughs).

Media's Story Guide

Thanks to Professor’s help, I was able to enroll to Momotsuki Academy, where Miyamoto-sensei is. Somehow schools just make me cheerful even more~. Above that, I never thought I’d meet Behoimi-chan in a place like this. All the bittersweet memories from the battlefield came flowing back and meeting her was so nostalgic~. While everyone was having troubles with presenting their summer holiday homework, we found out that someone had set up bombs inside the school. Just who’s work could this have been? For the time being, I together with Behoimi-chan will do our best with defusing bombs~.

Voices from our Staff

Noboru Jitsuhara

3* years - Animation Director

Compared to the Group expedition episode and Behoimi episode, Episode 10’s contents may be kinda plain. I thought of making the episode appearance showy, so I tried adding more shadows and other things than usual everyday (which I felt weren’t all that plain...). I wish you’ll take notice on Becky’s expression when she’s enduring the urge to go to toilet (laughs), and the last scene with Behoimi’s and Media’s conversation! The ending in particular doesn’t have any flashy action, but it does use a fair number of frames.

Yoshiaki Itou

38 years - Animation Director, Key animation

In Episode 1, I had a hard time capturing the cuteness of Becky drinking Cola in one go. Also, with the 2nd Opening Roulette☆Roulette” I couldn’t get the timing in Becky’s dance right, so I had to learn making it by trial and error.

Chalkboard and Telop Explanation

Ai and Makoto

A pure love manga, which was an original story from the author who established the whole ”Father with dignity = Flipping the table” theme in one of his manga. The famous line “I’d die for you!” from the bookworm boy, who had feelings for the manga’s heroine, is still hot to this day.

Just like you, brother!

My mount is fierce!

Lines from the F**st Brothers, who appear in the “X” part of the famous mecha anime series, which starts with letter G. This anime uses memorable lines as episode titles, which is why episode 3’s title is along the lines “My beloved mount~”.

20th Anniversary. Su**er Mar** Bro**ers

Even though the words are obscured, it’s obviously the extremely popular major title that was a big hit in the beginning of Fa**com era, which is still played on various game consoles and in various countries to this day. It was launched alongside Fa**com, which is probably why so many people got hooked on it.

Nagoya shot

It originates from a space in*ader game from one generation before Fa**com era. This technique takes advantage of a bug that causes enemies to stop attacking when they get too close to your ship, allowing you to lure them in as close as possible and defeat them in one go.

Love is the Plan the Plan is Death

A sci-fi short story by James Tiptee, Jr. It’s a masterpiece that has won numerous prizes. It’s so famous that even people with little knowledge on sci-fi genre know the title, so its name is worth of remembering.

Nobody’s answering the phone

The Futon Blew Up

These two foolish puns can be found everywhere, but everyone knows them because they were used in the manga where the original objective was to collect seven balls. They may be the most well-known puns, perhaps in all Japan.

Dekoboko Daigakkou

E-sture

In the variety show Minami ****suke no Dekoboko Daigakkou from the 1970s, there’s a segment called “E-sture”. Instead of using gestures, it was a quiz where contestants had to guess what was drawn on the whiteboard.

What, you moron?!

A joke from one of the initial members of that one group who would gather at 8 o’clock and perform live skits. He was later replaced by a certain Ken-chan, which is why many people say they have never seen a skit where this original member has participated in.

Hayaoshi Quiz Q

Because I’m a Worthless Human

DaviLyn Uranai

In-the-Brain ball team

Titles of a certain late night radio program’s segments. The way the host spits out poisonous speech, compared to how he smiles and shakes off his large body on daytime TV, has garnered him enemies in the industry world, but despite all that, it’s an incredibly popular show that has been on the air for over 10 years.

Hey, it’s

”Gomen kudasai” is a familiar line that’s one of the most famous jokes by a Yoshimoto Shinkigeki performer. Recently, there has been next to none exposure to the jokes on media outlets, making them hard to understand, but if you’re in your late 20s, you’ll probably get them, right?

Class 1-C Blonde Teacher

From a national drama that has the familiar line “Character for ‘person’ is made up of a person and a person”. The setting has been used as a joke everywhere. Speaking of blonde teachers, Dorian ****gawa made once a TV program with that name on it.

There are no more girls at Etoile

Etoile is the kissaten where Kurumi works in MaroMayu. Of course, its poster girl is Kurumi herself. Because she’s plain, she has no moe points. Wonder if somewhere there are fans of moe who are into non-moe girls too (are there such?).

Is there a doctor in the house?

These are the protagonist’s words, from a literary manga also known as “メメ Jellyfish” (which was a misprint of X X Jellyfish). This author’s manga gives off an abstruse impression, but if you want to become knowledgeable about this manga, you should read a few of his works.

I won’t let you people get away with this!

For whatever reason I’m an agent of the cops

The catchphrases of a delinquent girl detective, which was active in a drama series that became a social phenomenon. The juvenile delinquent, yankee boom around the time gave tailwind to the show’s popularity, making it a big hit. Alongside the show, yoyos got popular too.

Bake-ratta

Younger ghost brother’s line, who’s scarred of dogs. Like babies everywhere can only say things like “haai”, “chaan” and “babuu”, the younger brother here can only speak these words, which the older brother seems to understand.

Love is a Chicken Cutlet

Contrafactum that was sung in a 90s variety show. The original song became a huge hit, and due to this influence, the parody version’s popularity reached large scales.

Giant Salamander

There are two theories about the origin behind Giant Salamander’s alternative name, hanzaki: “Because it can move even when torn in half” and “Because its large mouth makes its body look like torn in half”. There are no reports of the species speaking human language by belching letters out of its mouth.

Takenokozoku?

They’re the youngsters who gathered at Harajuku’s Hokoten in the 80s. Perhaps even younger generations might know this, but the etymology of the word comes from the fact that the harlem suits (required clothing) they wore were often bought from a boutique called “Takenoko”.

Kholnyi Smerch

Flying phoenix

These seem to resemble S**nt Cyg**s’ and S**nt Phoe**x’s lethal moves. By the way, the technique on the right appears in the original manga, but has a different name in the anime. It’s impressive when combined with Cyg**s Dance, which has strangeness to it.
