Summerwear in the Coldest Season, Winterwear in the Hottest

寒に帷子 土用に布子

Idiom Explanation

"Summerwear" (katabira; 帷子) refers to linen-made summer clothing, while "winterwear" (nunoko; 布子) refers to cotton-made winter clothing. And the ”hottest” (doyou; 土用) refers to the hottest period of summer. In other words, it’s an idiom that describes something out of season and useless.

Hekiru Hikawa Check
The highlight is definitely the unusual production. There are the character introduction windows, conversations between chibi characters, and the "Pani Poni Dash!" filming crew.
Advanced Learning
1. Opening Title

A giant statue of Becky towers overs the desolate Earth. It’s a parody of the movie where the planet ruled by the apes is actually Earth.

2. Inside the teaching podium is…

There are a lot of things to check in the scene where Himeko bursts into the classroom. If you look closely, you can see that she as a cliché slipped and fell due to a banana peel. What’s more, inside the teaching podium, there was the cat god hiding, as well as an aiaigasa scribbled on the back of the podium. It's a scene that you'll miss if you're not paying attention, so it's essential to watch frame by frame.

3. Rei's favourite magazine

In her debut scene, Rei Tachibana is reading the magazine Forest. It has the same title as an occult magazine that characters edited and published in a previous anime by Director Shinbo. To people interested, you might wanna check out Director Shinbo's other works.

4. Photograph of Becky

The old geezer showed the Class C students Becky’s death portrait, but upon closer inspection, there are strange creatures around Becky. You can see animals with similar appearance in the original manga.

5. Advertisement on the bus

The typical bus stop name “Momotsuki-cho Iriguchi” left me unprepared for the advertisement of “Hokkaido Seminar” on the bus. Why Hokkaido of all places.

6. An enigmatic creature

Behind Himeko, a green creature can be found peeking out of the window. In addition to this, mysterious animals appear all over the screen in various scenes.

7. Natural Monument Debut

A giant salamander slides off from the mask of Principal’s bust. The salamander appears in many scenes starting from the first episode, such as when it draws the curtain and comes down with a background when Mesousa is shocked from being unable to carry a bag.

8. Juice's label

Pay attention to the character on the label of the canned juice that Becky buys in the forest. It resembles a doll that was the mascot character for a music program on a certain local TV station.

9. Welcome to Momotsuki Academy!

As the tea-carrying doll that came to welcome Becky unfolded its fan, suspicious-looking neo-light lights and signboards suddenly appeared in the forest. The sign on the right also depicts Behoimi.

10. Satellite with Momotsuki Sign

Why does a spy satellite watching over Earth have a mark of Momotsuki Academy. Does the academy own it? This log from Momotsuki Academy is included with many other things in the story. Let’s find them!

11. Patrol Car Affliance

The patrol car that takes Becky away is that of the Hiroshima Prefectural Police, a staple of gangster films. Come to think of it, in the OVA that Director Shinbo worked in the past, Tenamonya **yagers, a patrol car of Hiroshima Prefecture Police appeared for some reason in space. Incidentally, in the following scene, where the patrol car crashes into the staff room, the figures of Kuidao** Doll and the Old man from the fried chicken shop are there.

12. Eyecatch

The eyecatch of the first episode shows students calling out to Becky one after another, which can remind many people of the nostalgic eyecatch of Ik****-san. Now here's one more bit of trivia about Director Shinbo: In 2004, the director worked on a certain magical girl anime that had an eyecatcher similar to **kyu-san in the first episode. It's quietly becoming a tradition in Shinbo anime.

TL's note: This section didn't include a screenshot, so I made one where it compares the eyecatchers between "the mahou Shoujo anime" and PPD. In his eyecatcher I****u-san's saying "Don't rush it, don't rush it. Have some rest, have some rest".

13. "Maho" Throwing

Questions for Becky float inside Class C. In the midst of it, Ichijou tightly grabs the letters of "Maho" and throws them at Himeko. Judging from the way Himeko was blown away, Ichijou has quite strong shoulders?.

14. Change! Behoimi?

The silhouettes of three machines are projected over the classroom of Class D. The machines combine dynamically, ignoring the original shapes, to form a single robot... or so we thought, but its true identity is Behoimi. It can probably transform into Behoimi Dragon or Behoimi Poseidon as well.

15. Kunoichi running through classroom

In the Class C classroom, under the feet of students and an owl, Ichijo runs while dressed up as a kunoichi. It only appears for a moment, did many people miss it? Ichijo has a lot of other appearances like this, so don't miss them!

16. Aiaigasa on chalkboard

On the blackboard behind Rei, who is scolding Becky, there is an aiaigasa with an eel (アナゴ, anago) and salmon roe (イクラ, ikura) on it. And there's that cat hanging on there. It's a scene that reminds of a certain seafood family anime.

17. Lord Cat above the clouds

Lord Cat, who usually spends his time warming canned juice inside a vending machine, appears here above a cloud. After this, he casting his fishing rod and reeling in fish can be seen. Maybe cats just like fish?

18. Roboko outside the window

Becky has come back! Which makes the Class C run high with tension. Outside the window, Roboko’s silhouette is silently there. Is this a foreshadowing for the second episode? Skipping class, just what on earth is Serizawa doing that for.

19. A little bit of Dodzilla

After Roboko, Dodzilla appears and blends in with everyone else. It’s not exactly clear who is inside the costume, but it's probably Yuzuko Kurusu from Class A?

20. A giant mecha appears!

When Becky left the classroom, she saw a giant robot lion. And on top of the thing, a mysterious man is laughing loudly. Just who is he? Why has he come to Momotsuki Academy? These questions are not resolved in the slightest, and the story continues on to the second episode as if nothing had happened.

Development Study

Behoimi Screen

A video of Behoimi undergoing a combined transformation(?). In the TV version, it was simply a separate video, but now it is projected as if coming from Behoimi's own head. Is this also a type of magic? Even in Behoimi’s eyecatch scenes, there have been subtle changes here and there.

Himeko's Story Guide

Yahhoo~! Apparently, because of ****, our homeroom teacher ***-sensei, quit working at school! When we were told a new teacher was supposed to arrive, everyone was surprised to find out it was a blonde, child prodigy teacher! Since her name is Rebecca Miyamoto, her nickname would totally be "Rebeko" or "Rebbee" (Rei said "Becky"). Ah, while we all were around, the rumoured teacher finally arrived~! Oooh! The real thing is Armageddon Cu~te! Hey hey, don’t be scared, come over here~!

34 yo – Opening Video – Mecha Design – Animation Director

For the first episode, I was asked to design the aliens' spaceship. I'd never done mecha design before, so I took on the job without really understanding why I was chosen for it. I've always thought that “if you flipped Mu**i upside down, it would look just like the Enterprise”, so I incorporated this idea into the design. Because saying this would’ve led to a lot of trouble, I submitted my work without saying anything. Episode 6... was a highlight of the director's sense, and Oishi-san was the sole winner. He was dedicated to being behind the scenes. All the key animators really worked hard. I also apologize to the chief animation director for causing inconvenience. I am constantly reflecting on my actions. The episode highlights include the eyecatcher and Shiratori No. 2. Another one is the scene at the end of Part B, where Becky is pampered by the Class C students.

Chalkboard and Telop Explanation

Shaolin Temple 4000 Fungoes, Ask the priests in training!

Training that has been throughout China’s 4000-year history... probably? Baseball has less than 200 years of history, but our story elegantly ignores that fact. Also, the martial art that originated from the Shaolin Temple is called Shaolin Kung Fu. It’s different to Shorinji Kempo, which originates from Japan.

In Commemoration of Scaling Mt. Everest

Over the Old Geezer’s head is a halo, as well as a drawing of Everest. But it does look more like Mount Fuji... By the way, in mountaineer George Mallory's famous quote, "Because it’s there", he is referring to Mount Everest.

"Get's!"

The signature gag of a famous comedian that everyone knew. This memorable gag that swept across living rooms across the country. There was even a board game released, but did anyone buy it?.

Don’t think the Earth and humanity will be around forever

The original proverb “Don't think there will be your parents and money forever”, but it's true that the “Earth and humanity” are not things that will last forever either. It's a proverb that can be easily applied in many ways.

Even a walking dog can hit a pole

This proverb is the very first one in Iroha Karuta and has become a standard because of it. It means that if you get involved in something that doesn’t affect you, you will suffer misfortune. It is also used to mean that something good will happen unexpectedly while you are out and about.

Be invoked

Space Runaway Ide*n was released as a double feature movie, and this is the final part that wasn’t shown on TV (complete with the first part “Con**ct”). There’s a great amount of additional doodles for Ide*n.

3.141592

At one time it was thought to be 3, but the value of pi is still 3.14. The Guinness Book of World Records lists a person who can remember this endless series of numbers up to 54,000 digits. It's hard to believe he’s a human like rest of us.

Combat Echizen

Echizen **suke, a former mercenary and now a doctor, is the protagonist of a legendary shooting game. He has a distinctive high-pitched voice despite his age, and his favorite thing is fried rice noodles. “While he is at it”, he may sometimes choose a red door.

"Let’s do it!!"

This is a line often spoken by the main character of a robot anime, which has the meaning of "I will empty myself and cut down the enemy". If you turn it as “Ya*pansa~!”, it becomes a line by the villain of NG Knight **mune 40 (the voice actor is same).

"Hau~ I wanna take it home~!"

From a doujin game that was made into anime and is also scheduled to be ported to the consoles. This is a line often uttered by a girl who has a weakness for cute things and want to take home anything cute, be it an object or a person.
