Good and Bad Luck Are Decided by the Person, Not the Calendar

凶は人によりてによらず

Script: Kenichi Kanemaki | Animation Director: Yasuyuki Kai, Minoru Tanaka | Storyboard: Shin Oonuma | Director: Takuji Kimura

Idiom Explanation

Good and bad luck, as well as good and bad things, aren’t determined by whether the day is good or bad, but by person’s own actions. If you do good deeds, good things will happen.

Hekiru Hikawa Check
Finally, Inugami-kun gets an appropriate appearance (lol). Ichijou’s little sister running a lot around caused a pretty great chaos. The way how the staff room was depicted in a fun light gave a nice feel to it.
Advanced Learning
1. Cold Open

Nanjo in montsuki hakama galloping through the seashore on a white horse. No explanation needed, as the entrance is reminiscent to the leading actor of Matsuken Samba and Rice Shogun, the leading role of one jidaigeki. However, shortly after this, Ichijo's younger sister appears on the scene and the title changes to The Unfettered Little Sister. Yes, this time she’s the one who participates actively (?) the most.

2. Teaching Materials for Math

The title of the teaching materials Becky’s holding on her hand is called “Moesuu”. The moe reference book boom that started with Mo*tan has now reached out to textbooks.

3. Ichijou’s Little Sister Outside the Window

Ichijou’s little sister is loitering around the school grounds. Others, like Jason, also drop outside the window.

4. You are responsible for your own death

This phrase comes from Onmitsu **shin Kokoro’e-no-Jou, which is part of Ōedo Sōsamō. There’s the societal problem of elderly dying alone, which begs the question if someone can pick up Old Geezer’s corpse post-mortum.

5. A Castle of Iron under the Pool?

The gray thing under the pool us Mazinger * By the way, real Mazinger * doesn’t launch from a pool-like facility, but from a sewage treatment plant, where’s Pho*** Power Laboratory.

6. Becky Pinball

Don't be distracted by the girls of Class C in swimsuits who appear one after another on the left side of the screen. On the right, Becky is being bounced around like a pinball, making things go haywire. After all, you can’t be the only one who skips cleaning.

7. What a terrifying child...!

Shocked Nanjo. The line "What a terrifying child" and the cold look are like something out of a very taiga drama -like manga.

8. Mysterious Clown in the Pool

In the top right corner of the screen, on the water reflection, is that a celebrity everyone knows? A red nose, strangely large red lips, and a distinctive hairstyle. Is it the mascot character of that one store, which has conquered the fast food world?

9. Today’s Behoimi

Customary Behoimi’s transformation scene, which this time in the style of Space Sheriff G*van. By the way, the combat suit is something that’s not “equipped” but rather “evaporated”.

10. Mesousa, Ready to Face Danger

One after another, special skill moves from fighting games are unleashed. To explain every single one: Spinning Bird Kick, Shura Ha’ou Koukazan (Tetsuzankou), Oniyaki, Flying Denture Attack and Moon Attack are present. Moon Attack, which appears last, is a special move that’s present in the mecha anime Invincible Super Man Za*bot 3.

11. Inside Cork Gun’s Bullet

During Mesousa’s tossing up in the air, Ichijou shoots her with a cork gun. Among the bullets, there’s one mahjong’s 1000-point stick.

12. Last Scene

By riding in an ambulance, Becky was supposed to be heading hospital, but for some reason she found herself on the verge of a massive explosion in outer space. Before you realise the situation, Becky unpreventably explodes, but Captain, is it really okay to say “It might happen”…?

Development Study

The Unfettered Little Sister

This introductory sequence was also in the TV version, but the background looks even better now.

MASSIVE!

Combatants doing ring tossing. In the TV version, at first glance it looked like they aren’t wearing any pants, but that was modified to look like they are wearing them. Apparently the sports of ancient Olympics were competed stark naked.

Such a Hot Summer

A scene where everyone from Class C cleaning the pool. In the DVD version, heat haze rises in the background, making the heat feel even more intense. On such a day, even if you’re not part of Class C, you’d rather go to swim instead of just clean up.

Mesousa, Good-for-Nothing

As she’s got called ”useless”, Mesousa is thrown into a shock. As the flowing text behind her back increases in the DVD, it mutually increases the harshness of treating her.

Book Collection Switchover

The contents of the bookshelf have been almost completely replaced from the TV version. However, the book collection gives an unshakable feel that it isn’t something that won’t be found from the school library. Instead, there’s now probably even more strange books.

Illustrations of Menko Cards

Menko cards, with Aliens were playing onboard the ship, have illustrations. Both the front and back have been modified. Surface side has a pose that looks like something before playing rock-paper-scissors, but on the flip side, Captain is shown to have turned into stone from the shock of defeat. The cards must have been made by Aliens after all.

Episode 7 Setup Collection

Female School Swimsuit

Standard school swimsuit for females. Ichijou’s swimsuit colour is different.

Ichijou (hooded)

The disaster prevention hood and monpe are reminiscent of clothes worn during air raids, but the red floral patterns give a splash of colour.

Igarashi-sensei (casual)

Summer-like, cool fashion. I would’ve loved to see what her swimsuit looks like.

Akane Serizawa (Kokemidoron)

The setting is that the moss that has been piling up since last summer has taken on a human form.

Wanio

Apparently crocodiles have weak upper jaws so it's okay to step on them.

Nanjo's Story Guide

The pool cleaning duty this year ended up to everyone at Class C. Even though cleaning the pool is tough in this heat, I wish them to make their best and make the pool refreshing to use. Meanwhile, Inugami-kun seemed to be looking over Ichijou-san’s little sister, who had got lost on her way in school. The little sister was meant to be brought to pool where everyone from Class C were, but at that time, I think I saw the shadow of a giant infant outside the window… No, it must just be my imagination. More importantly, have anyone seen where could have my precious pets wandered off to?

Voices from our Staff

Aboshi Mako

Born in the year 81 – Chibi Character Design, Eyecatcher Animation etc.

I believe the idea of changing the ending for every episode wasn’t something that was considered at the start... probably. Few months before the broadcast began, Director gave me the explanation of “chibis should move on the screen without any reason” and “they’re divided into frames, with each one moving separately”, but I started my work without really any plan in my mind. It’s amazing how an incomprehensible explanation like that (I’m sorry) could be put into shape like this. “Itou-san standing on the edge of the screen for no reason” too, is something I certainly wanted to implement. In the original draft for Episode 9 eyecatcher, there was Rei and Becky, which was changed to Media for the broadcast. The final eyecatcher was cuter than the one I drew. I can’t wait to see the broadcast with my layout and the animation director’s wonderful drawings added to it.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

“ ’Summer’ and ‘Cute’ were the two things I thought up in my mind.” In the midst of accessories that use pink as an accent colour, the white belt gives a feeling of good sense.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

“ ’I want her to wear a hat’ is what I was told, and that’s what I made”. Straw hats look good on little girls.

Look Back to Episode 7

In relation to Pani Poni Education interview

Kanemaki It seemed like a fan service episode, but there wasn’t any service that much at all (laughs).

Shinbo There were things that were reconsidered.

Kanemaki But the right side of the Punishment Pinball was like a fan service corner after all. Come to think of it, this episode and the bento episode are probably the only times when Inugami was depicted properly.

-There’s a scene in the camp episode, where both Inugami and Nanjo are together, right?

Kanemaki They’re a couple we picked up from the original work. They aren’t dating, but it looks like they are.
