You Are Responsible for Your Own Death

して屍拾うなし

Script: Kenichi Kanemaki | Animation Director: Hideyuki Morioka | Storyboard & Director: Tatsuya Oishi

Idiom Explanation

One passage by Onmitsu Dō**** Kokoro’e-no-Jou, from Ōedo **samō. These words symbolize the way of life for undercover nin**s, who punish the evildoers, without any person or the world knowing.

Hekiru Hikawa Check

Miyako is so cool! Everyone is so cool! Since it’s a spin-off, they went all out for it.

Yo yo yoi! Yo yo yoi!

Advanced Learning
1. First Some History For Studying

The historical events that appear one after another, although replaced with the word “hau hau”, all of them happened in reality. Remember these years and contents, and use them to your advantage on an actual exam.

TL note: There's an error here. See Development Study below. Screenshot from the TV release, subtitled by Oyasumi.

2. The Commissioner of Finance – Bekiemon Miyamoto

Role names and cast credits are present, which is very jidaigeki-like. Credits, including the “Pani Ponin”, played by Class C, have been similarly standardised for this episode.

3. Inside Crab Are Crab Sticks?

Inside a crab’s see-through view, which Himeko imagined, 8 crab sticks have been inserted in there. Going by Himeko’s logic, crab = crab sticks?

4. Subliminal-stic Kamishibai

Kamishibai-like insert cuts, which have no relation to the flow of this episode’s main story whatsoever, appear out of nowhere. In the latter half of it, Kurumi will have hard time dealing with it.

5. WHAT did you say?

Bekiemon wants to gain more power by raking in the money with Hau Hau Tax. Tonight as well she’s pleased by the reception of unscrupulous merchants. While on it, Yuuma accidentally leaks out her true feelings, and Bekiemon changes to this expression, accompanied with the shakuhachi sound effect. She looks just like some kind of a white-faced foolish feudal lord.

6. Taste For Chuck **rris

With that Yuuma made a joke, but who is Chuck **rris? This man, who lies sprawled out and flipped over, is none other than the muscular action star Chuck **rris.

7. Baby Carriage Includes Weapons!?

From the baby carriage Dai**rō-like Suzune rides on, suddenly missiles are fired! Actually it’s similar to **ne Wold and Cub, as it’s a little-known fact that baby carriages were equipped with machines guns. In old jidaigeki, it was pretty much that anything goes...

8. In the Swarm of Pigs That Person Is...!?

Together with fleeing parent Otome and child Suzune, huge swarm of pigs are escaping. In the midst of them are mixed black shadows, which are one super-famous boxing manga’s protagonist and his rival? Otome’s and Suzune’s mission was a failure, but this is what a real getaway looks like.

9. Can’t you see the emblem in front of your eyes!

Famous line that’s heard every Monday on 8.45 AM nationwide, during teatime. In the jidaigeki series where the best vice-shōgun ever travels across various regions, this line actually became established in Season 3.

10. Mesousa, Expert in Theater

Other than being a voice actress, Mesousa’s actress Vanilla Yamazaki-san is also an active katsubenshi (live narrator for silent films).

TL note: See Development Study below. Screenshot from the TV release, subtitled by Oyasumi.

11. Old-School Shōwa Era Skit

Speaking of ”Here, Father, your rice porridge is ready”, a big hit gag was born from a skit of a popular 1960s variety show Shabondama **liday. The daughters in this skit were played by nation-wide famous singer twins, who were also famous from their roles as fairies communicating their feelings with a giant moth monster.

TL note: Recreation of the skit can be viewed on Dailymotion. Note how the director in the skit screams "Yasuda!", similar to how one PPD crew member is shouted at in Episode 1.

12. Set a Trap And You Won’t Fail

Regular performers’ black-and-white still and alternately Ukiyo-e prints are shown on the screen, while refined narration flows in the background. It’s of course in the same vein as openings of Hi****** series. The title “Shin Hissatsu Paniponin” continues to appear, and the reason to why “Shin” has been carefully included is because this episode’s contents are based on the 10th installment of series, Shin Hissatsu ***okinin. Later appearing subtitle “~useless” is another example of this.

13. Rat -de yansu

The gentleman thief who disturbs Edo’s night, R*t Kid, played by Serizawa. She put on a disguise to deceive the eyes of officers, and even though she’s still a rat, she’s no “kid”, but a “man”. This is a familiar Shigeru Mizu** reference.

14. Appearance of Black-Market Big Bosses

Nenbutsu no Miyako received a commission from R*t Kid, but she can’t start working on it with her determination alone. The offer is put up for auction in the gathering that manages the entire Edo undercover business, and you must win the bid at the spot to take up on the job! This follows the footsteps of aforementioned Shin Hissatsu ***okinin’s basic setting. Miyako made a successful bid on the job for a ridiculously low, markets-ignoring price, which was a common situation in the main work. And apparently, seeing the realistic portrayal of black-market ringleaders and bodyguards here, Hi***** fans nation-wide were moved to tears...

15. At What Time Today In Shibuya?

Kurumi got the gathering place wrong and ended up being kept outside of the fun. Both the Moyai Statue and Statue of Hachikō are well-known meeting spots at Shibuya, Tokyo. They’re located at the middle of the station, but are on opposite sides of each other, so let’s everyone keep our eyes out.

16. The Talk of Edo? Electric Amusement

Prior to punishing a jidaigeki villain, they must always let their guard down. Becky has indulged herself with a TV game. This game console was released some time before Fa**com. But probably not as far as Edo period.

17. Techniques Done Splendidly

Speaking of Hi*****’s biggest highlights, punishment scenes where characters make excellent use of their splendid techniques come to mind. Himeko’s cowlick slugger, Ichijou’s string, Miyako’s dislocation of bones... or looking at it, a headbutt (there’s roentgen too!) and with that, we’re doing our best to keep up with the original work.

18. Wrapping Things Up Undoubtly With This!

With Pani Ponin’s actions, incident has been resolved safe and sound. Wrapping the story up with “yo yo yoi, yo yo yoi” follows the pattern that was used in Den***tori monochou.

19. The Song Setsugetsuka

The ending is also jidaigeki-like, with an enka-styled theme song and vertically written credits. The large sun floating in the background, and a name like “Nenbutsu no Miyako Yui Horie” appearing there, it’s a scene that will impress anyone well-known in this field with a “woah”.

20. The Final Blow

After the jobs done with, Class C members go to hot springs. Pressing the button located at Ichijou’s nape, makes a building written to be “SquEni” break into smithereens. These special effects were handled by the script write Katsuhiko Takayama-shi.

TL note: For more about the process of creating this explosion, see the Extra Lesson section further below.

Development Study

Satchō Alliance Was In the Year 1866

In TV version it was year 1886, but... Sorry, we messed up.

While Fleeing

Disappering into the scene where Otome and Suzune push their way through a flock of pigs, few figures of people, absent from the TV version, are here and there. In the forefront, there’s a man looking like wandering samurai running, and in the back, there’s a character that looks like to have appeared in a classical pre-war robot manga.

Taishōgoto Playing and Narration

From the scene where Mesousa narrates Behoimi’s and others’ heroic fight. In DVD Mesousa has gotten a taishōgoto in her hands. As it’s part of Vanilla Yamazaki-san’s narrating style, this is an even more faithful representation of her.

Tension from Mosquito Coils

In the scene where R*t Kid Serizawa shows her face from the shadows, enamel signs of a long-established life insurance company and a company famous for mosquito coils have been added. Uuh, what time period is this episode to be set to?

Do Not Push DANGER

Letters have been written and added to Ichijou’s back. However, when one is told not to push it, it in return makes them want to press it even more. And when it’s Himeko, that’s even more true.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

”Highlight is the chonmage topknot”. The clothes are as expected an impression of Ba**-Tonosama? Written silly letters of “Splendid” (あっぱれ) on her folding fan make it all the more fun.

Episode 24 Setup Collection Part 3

Hibiki Watanuki (Tipster)

After being scouted in Episode 6, did she assume the role of a tipster?

Saotome-sensei (Tōshin)

He’s a tōshin, but hasn’t gotten his hands dirty in any shady business.

Akira Miyata (Town girl)

Even when wearing a kimono, she falls in a showy way, as usual to her character.

Akane Serizawa (R*t Kid)

Her hairstyle looks like cat ears, but she’s a rat.

Misao Nanjo (Poor town girl)

Despite being a lady from a wealthy upbringing, she’s for some reason living in poverty.

Old Geezer (Grandpa Careless)

Does he have the bodily strength to travel all across the country?

Tsurugi Inugami (Mito **mon)

Just because he was silver hair, he’s treated as a retiree. Our condolences...

Behoimi (Atsumi Kaku**shin)

Showing the inro has traditionally been her duty.

Media (Sasaki Sukesabu**)

Is wearing gloves together with kimono part of the maid etiquette?

Himeko's Story Guide

Tidings, tidings! Tidings, **taka-sa** has... What was it again? Well anyway, more importantly, Episode 24 of Pani Poni Dash! is a jidaigeki! Becky is a child magistrate! Becky in kimono is all fine and dandy~! And then commissioner Becky went and declared a “Hau Hau Tax”. Were you to cry, they’d barge in and charge a 100 yen tax no matter what, which is an awful thing~. That’s where we, allies of justice protecting the city of Edo, gather and go out to punish her! Evil Becky’s butt needs some spanking~!

Voices from our Staff

Hideyuki Morioka

(Animation Director – 34 yo)

Above all, Nenbutsu no Miyako. My main focus was to draw her with a man’s looks. Personally, swirly eyes are a thing I love, and when I got the order from the Director to do her in Sanpei Shira**’s style, my reply was “If that’s okay with you, then I’ll do it”. At the earliest stage I tried creating her with the image of Cy*org 009. The highlight here is probably how Kurumi is left out. I think she had the most tasteful role.

Director's Point of View

Tatsuya Oishi

(Director, Storyboard)

By chopping up scenes to small cuts, I tried to create the film with a good tempo (It was rather a desperate measurement, and I think there became to be over 450 cuts in total). The game console Bekiemon is playing, is actually my belonging. Even for fifty-yen coins, I used old-fashioned hard coins. I edited the symbols out, so it’s probably hard to understand (laughs).

Chalkboard and Telop Explanation

Build a shelf in your heart!

It means, for example, a person frequently litters, but then puts their actions aside and doesn’t hesitate to call out other people who litters. Appeared in Honō no ***kōsei, it’s a proverb that would be interesting to watch in action.

I tripped over a stone and my items spilled out everywhere, but when I took a step forward to pick them up I stepped on a big land mine...

Greatest tragedy in the dungeon RPG “Certain the Wanderer”. Stepping on a large landmine leaves the main characters in the verge of death, and all their surrounding items vanish. Since the game’s main objective is collecting items, it’s so sad you won’t even shed tears.

That’s Mister Kaneda to you, punk!

Set in a near future Tokyo that fell into ruin, a boy who’s the leader of a motorcycle gang, said this line to a boy who formerly was his ally. As both the movie and the manga were big hits, this is one scene from a monstrously influential work, who’d have a profound impact later on.

S**ny Br**n

And second place is Silk!!?

The win order of a horse race that happened in 1997: 1st place is Su**y Bri*an, and on 2nd place Silk L**htning. On the same blackboard is written “More Light!”, which has the same pronunciation as the race horse who won the 3rd place in the same race.

TL note: As ADV's reference notes pointed out, Motto Hikari O couldn't have possibly been in this race, as it was born in 1998.

The Year 685:

Dawn of the First Mythril Rush

Historical topic from inside a certain nationally popular RPG XI online. By the way, the early period of the online game, when players gave up of fighting monsters and became enthusiastic about Mythril mines, is referred as the Second Mythril Rush.

Wizened, hideous little boy

Words that appear in the foreword of Osamu Da***’s novel ** Longer Human. When the work’s protagonist, which the novelist calls “I”, looks at a photo from the time he was an infant, he describes it as “an expression so freakish, and at the same time so unclean and even nauseating”, and then states with the said line of thoughts.

Monetary Value -ism

Reading these in order, it forms the name of a dubious religion that became popular in the South of Lake Biwa, at the time when Toyotomi Hideyoshi was still as Kinoshita Tōkichirō. Red, blue and white ninjas have, across different media formats such as manga, tokusatsu, anime and movies, engaged in fierce battles.

Himeko Katagiri (Himeko of the Cowlick)

The always cheerful fishmonger. She runs around Edo like Isshin **suke.

Rei Tachibana (Firepower Rei)

Her regular profession is one of a Chinese restaurant owner. Her undercover profession costume is undoubtedly sexy.

Kurumi Momose (Grassy Kurumi)

Because she wasn’t able to participate in the punishment, it’s a shame how her lethal skill remains unknown.

Ichijou (Ichijou the Shamisen Player)

In Episode 6, her clothes were similar to ****ki Kyomoto’s, but for this episode, they were changed to look like **Yoshi Nakajou’s.

Ichijou’s Little Sister (I****-san)

This little sister knows about her big sister’s undercover profession, or she has just good wits?

No. 6 (Azure No.6)

Working together with Kurumi at Rei’s restaurant. Her name reminds in a way some sort of a submarine.

Miyako Uehara (Nenbutsu no Miyako)

Runs a business called “Forehead Osteopathy”. Her technique is head-butting, but for some reason she also cracks her fingers.

Yuuma & Yuuna Kashiwagi (Ōoku)

They appear as villains who are currying favour with Bekiemon and try profiting from her work.

Suzune Shiratori (Dai**rō)

Grown up all strong and healthy, she can no longer fit in the baby carriage with her ultra body.

Otome Akiyaka (Ogami **tō)

Assasin who follows the hellish path with her child. It must be hard to take care of a child looking like that...

Baby Carriage

Despite carrying Suzune, its pride is its indestructible durability.

Igarashi-sensei (**yama no Kin-san)

No matter how you look at it, the tattoo of flowering cherry blossoms looks like a T-shirt.

Shu Momose (Rōnin)

A rōnin that could be found anywhere. First of all, get to work.

Zula and Yankee (Okappiki)

Villain duo who take commoners’ money by ripping them off with Hau Hau Tax.

Yuzuko Kurusu (Namazu costume)

The costume-maker. It’s a mystery if there’s a demand for these things.

Look Back to Episode 24

In relation to The Way of Writing Pani Poni Dash! interview

Kanemaki As it’s a homage, to first off explain the characters, I created development for them in the first half that weren’t Hi****** jokes. Episode’s 30 minutes long, and it can be watched rather as naturally like other episodes, but it’s actually special since almost every character makes their appearance.

Shinbo Couldn’t imagine that Mito **mon wasn’t Old Geezer but Inugami.

Kanemaki I thought that if I was going to do a parody, might as well be twisted about it (laughs). Oishi-san’s sense of direction was a major factor in making this episode outstanding.

Extra Lesson: The Way of Making the Explosion Scene

Inside the unpredictable Pani Poni Dash!, the C part of Episode 24 must’ve startled everyone. As to how was this explosion scene of a certain real-life building filmed, we’ll be showing you how it happened in real time!

The one who filmed this episode’s explosion scene, was scenario writer Katsuhiko Takayama-san. Takayama-san has the qualifications to be a person responsible of the safety measures when handling with explosives, and he also belongs to an independent film production group, so he was the perfect person to take up the job in filming this episode. He is introduced in the ending credits as a director for special effects too.

Getting Things Ready

An igniter (点火器) works by passing electricity through a fuse cord to detonate the gun powder (火薬) on the other end. Due to its shape, it’s generally called as “shamisen”. Since we’re handling fire here, it’s better not to forget a fire extinguisher (消火器) when preparing.

1) 11:30 Installing the Building

Photo of the building was pasted on board made from Styrofoam plaster, and installed on a pedestal. The shadow in the photo makes it look like three-dimensional, but in fact, the building is flat.

(Left photo) The building is in size 1:1 with Mesousa.

(Middle photo) The base used for the building is actually Takayama’s computer desk.

2) 12:30 Attaching Gunpowder

Behind and below the building is where the fuse cord that’s attached to gunpowder (impact points [弾着], black smoke granulation cannon [黒煙造粒砲]) is set up. Impact points are what make the building go boom, and the granulation cannon is for creating the black smoke after the explosion. While visualising the explosion scene in mind, it’s when the positions of gunpowder is determined.

Can you see the slit on the back, which is there to make it explode properly?

3) 13:15~16:00 Let’s Start Filming

Operating with ”shamisen” makes in turn the gunpowder electrified and explode. Filming and seeing it for the first time helps to adjust the amount of gunpowder, and change more the material on photo’s back, as the more it’s filmed.

(Lower middle pic) The napalm smoke behind the explosion was hard to see, which is why he retook a video of only the explosion flames.

Splendid Building Explosion!

*As it’s dangerous, please don’t try this at home.

Summary for the Problematic (?) C Part:

By Himeko pressing the button on Ichijou’s back, the building that’s displayed on a door goes in a big boom. In reality, the door where the poster for “SquEni”, which you might’ve heard somewhere before (laughs), was pasted on, is the door for Shaft’s company president’s office.
