Misfortunes Never Come One by One

り目に祟り

Script: Kenichi Kanemaki | Animation Director: Satoshi Iwataki, Kyouko Kametani |

Storyboard: Osamu Tadokoro | Director: Taiki Nishimura

Idiom Explanation

This is a metaphor for how during times of one being troubled and weakened, even worse things are bound to happen. This phrase is used when unfortunate things end up piling up in unfortunate times.

Hekiru Hikawa Check

Himeko can fly now, and Becky’s crying face is cute; it’s an episode about worry-free school life… in past tense (laughs).

Advanced Learning
1. A Space Odyssey?

Also sprach Zara**ustra -like BGM fits to this screen. It has the same atmosphere as a real masterpiece of sci-fi movies, like the one which depicts a mankind that evolved from apes, be evolved even further.

2. Bekiemo~n

Due to being cold, Kurumi’s face is like of a boy’s, who begs for tools from a blue and white cyber cat robot.

3. Right Here, Here!

Command list of a Fa**com game, where Bo** and Ya** pursue the truth in a serial murder case and which became a basis for adventure games onwards, is displayed here. The one who made Saotome-sensei like this is… of course, Suzune.

4. The Hot Springs Guide to the Galaxy

Miyako and others are excitedly looking through a hot spring guidebook, to which Ichijou composedly points out their absurdity. But then she herself suddenly appears on guidebook’s cover page, soaked in a hot spring.

5. Even Jerseys Suits On Her

Himeko called jerseys as ”not cute”, but when dressed up by Rei, they’re actually pretty sexy. Seems like anything suits for Rei.

6. Formation of Puppet Troupe

Suzune formed a puppet troupe on a whim, and following Becky, Kurusu joins too. Though, as expected, Serizawa and Kurusu remained oblivious to their mutual antagonism.

7. Misao Brain Meeting

This time’s agenda is ”Why did Inugami suddenly drop from a corridor window to the school yard?”. Although she came up with the conclusion that it might be good to cut her hair, she doesn’t look like presenting a suggestion of helping Inugami.

8. Holed Pasta Is?

After casually mentioning ”ancient Holed Pasta Civilisation”, Himeko’s imagination runs wild. Somehow it expanded to be an old Western film -like story.

TL note: Screenshot from the TV release. In DVD, Himeko has been changed to look like Hayashiya Sanpei I, doing his signature apologising pose.

9. Even Becky Has It Rough!

Becky, who meets constant disasters, fell into a hole, which was swarming with Itou-sans. On the left and right side are Di* Dug -styled characters, so is Becky being targeted with pumps and rocks?

10. Disasters Fall Upon Everybody

Not only Becky, but unfortunate incidents befall everyone. Kurumi received an SMS that said “I pray for your misfortune”. But it feels like that if there was a message with a portrait similar to this going around, a lot of people wouldn’t mind being unfortunate.

11. Even Mesousa Has It Rougher!

In Pani Poni, Mesousa is the synonym to unhappiness. The shock she felt after Himeko said “Your existence itself is a misfortune”, with images of her ears disappearing and carrots being shredded, is conveyed ve~ry well. Can’t really sympathise her.

12. Including This One, Only Four More Episodes

Ichijou the Class Rep. thanks you all for your continued patronage, as there are now only four more episodes left of her. In addition to avoid excessive smoking, please remember to take your medicine.

13. Go! Momotsuki Academy Class 1-C!

When everyone in Class C is informed of Earth’s impending crisis, under Principal’s command, one after another transform to have combat suits. One that makes you want to rewind and watch it again; it’s a truly impressive transformation scene.

14. ”In this cold?!”

Even though things were all pumped up, this single comment from Kurumi ruined the mood. But while they’re at it, just like when Earth was affected by radioactive radiation from pla*** bombing, the time of destruction is drawing near! In next episode... No, it’s continued in Episode 25!

Development Study

Power Source?

Under aliens’ feet, there are several batteries inside the floor. The reason for them being there remains unrealised, but they probably serve as space ship’s power source.

Orchestra Cuts

To the orchestra-themed eyecather cuts, background text and colour scheme, among other things, have been added meticulously. Compared to TV, they have become much more eye-catching.

Gen*le Hurricane

Inside some classroom, there’s the figure of a British superhuman from **nnikuman. Since he’s the principal of a superhuman training school, it’s not hard to imagine him to come and observe an ordinary school. This person’s disciple, despite having a computer, struggled with multiplication...

Day the Earth Perishes

The gigantic graffiti pasted on Earth has been changed. In the TV version it had the skull mark on it, which has become a drawing of a collapsed building. It looks like it’s a picture drawn by none other than Ichijou’s little sister, and considering the way aliens imagine end of the world, it seems like she’s always involved in it one way or another. Well, she really does give out a feel of a person who’d do something mischievous like this.

Release Of Restrictions!

It’s a scene where Watanuki’s skirt zipper breaks, accompanied with the sound of ruin. In the TV version, she was wearing under her skirt (due to adult circumstances) shorts, but in the DVD, it’s changed to a panty shot. Hooray to revision! Hooray to DVD!

Magic **ight?

Himeko expresses how spaghetti with holes is ”so pliant it’s like you’re on top of the world” with her entire body, like in a cooking manga. In the anime where high school girl trio become magic knights, there’s a similar scene with dressing in armor. Himeko’s face is also Cl*mp-stic, or rather, it’s close to ****ko Ishida’s style, who was responsible of the anime’s character design.

Don’t treat your life so carelessly!

Above a crane, the captain and the first officer of a submarine, who solves not ancient Holed Pasta Civilisation, but ancient Atlantis Civilisation. Is this reproducing the famous scene before the ship submerged? Afterwards, the collision of two popular horror movie killers take place above the crane. A movie where those two actually face off was also released not too long ago, right?

Ja**nko’s Cat

Two cats facing each other on opposite sides of the screen. They can be vaguely seen in the neighbourhood of an izakaya, managed by a 5th grade elementary school girl, set in a downtown of Osaka’s Nishinari ward. Both of them have the tendency to wander around, so they might have just casually dropped by Momotsuki Academy. By the way, if these cats were to confront Lord Cat, something amazing would most likely happen.

Strongest in Ōu

Becky is lunged at by a dog, who has inherited his father’s ideal of building a paradise for dogs in Tōhoku region, and seems to be an expert in techniques suited for an Akita dog. Passed down through a clan of wolves, “*****ing the Absolute Fang of Heaven’s Wolf” possesses enough strength to behead a giant killer bear, so Becky is totally in serious trouble!

Amazingly, Even Himeko...

”Becky, you poor thing!” said Himeko and was going to give a hug to her, but DVD increased her scariness by 200%! Even someone other than Himeko would be put off by this.

Countdown To Destruction

TV version had 31 days left until destruction, which has been strongly increased nearly 19 times more. If they had given them 765 days, it would’ve been far better.

Applied Material Explanation: It’s Morning Nationwide! Part 2

This is the staple gag of Pani Poni Dash!, used almost in every episode. Originating from **suji Tanioka’s gag manga, which was explained previously. From Episode 14 onwards, various characters have done the announcing, so let’s look back and inspect who has shouted “Morning!” and in what fashion.

It looks like anyone who attends Momotsuki Academy will have their turn on doing this joke. Even if it’s a raccoon.

Zula too has announced ”Morning!” quite a lot of times. Hearing it shouted with such force, anyone would wake up instantly.

In the latter half, chances of seeing Kurusu’s “Morning!” have unexpectedly decreased. Seeing her is a somewhat relief, after seeing all those scenes with Zula.

When Nanjo had the occasion to say ”Morning! …is what it is, everyone”, she did it in a polite and lady-like manner.

Look Back to Episode 23

In relation to The Way of Writing Pani Poni Dash! interview

Kanemaki As a request from the Director, this episode directly tackles the challenge of adapting an original work to visual medium. Because we didn’t want to end it off as a collection of short jokes, we inserted spreading omens of Earth’s destruction.

Shinbo Around this time, I was feeling sad, having to part with this work. It was already all over, but I had the feeling of wanting to do lots of various jokes more.

Kanemaki I actually wanted to use the entire film on the puppet theatre… It becomes like a puzzle when many small jokes have been thrown in, so there comes the point to think what kind of an order would be good for the episode, and you have to use your head quite often.

Suzune's Story Guide

Yahhoo, how are you all? I’m very good, but since it has become cold as of late, especially peeps from Class C are all in low spirits. That’s no good, with that attitude you wouldn’t place on top in an Alaskan sled dog race! So, I thought about sharing happiness for everyone else, and started a puppet theatre. Titled, Shiratori Puppet Troupe! I got Serizawa-chan to participate, so let’s this all together, with Miyamoto-sensei and Kurusu-chan too~. Somehow everyone seems to stuff like “I’ve been unlucky lately”, but don’t worry, just chop it all away~!

Voices from our Staff

Satoshi Iwataki

(Animation Director for little over half of the episode – 42 yo)

I had gotten used to this work’s style by Episode 23, but I couldn’t come up with any small jokes, so I kept leaving it all up to Shaft-sama.

Kyouko Kametani

(Animation Director)

The thing I focused in my part was making Becky look cute, despite it being not her day. Also. The clothes from Episode 22, which have her wearing the woolen hat, are even my personal favourites.

Director's Point of View

Taiki Nishimura

(Director – 32 yo)

I put a lot of effort in timing the lines. In a certain work I previously participated in, the Director would say to us “Timing is everything!”, and for that reason I’m extra carefully looking at it this time around. Please have a look on the timing between the boke and the tsukkomi. I believe it might be difficult to understand how detailed it all is...

Chalkboard and Telop Explanation

CAT CRAP!!

In the game Kimi ga Nozomu **en, an employee of a certain family restaurant would shower the protagonist with these words, seemingly every time. By the way, for this game’s anime adaptation, Kenichi Kanemaki-san was tasked in series composition, and Katsuhiko Takayama-san wrote the script for it as well.

Humanity Quiz

Segment from an ultra quiz (?) show, well-known from comedians’ over-the-top reactions. The basic pattern is that at the accommodation place, a senior comedian invites a junior comedian to their own room, to where they’ve set up a prank. It has birthed countless legends.

I swear, I’m not joking!!

Try saying this while holding the palm of your hand in front of you, facing forward and shaking your fixed face. That famous person, who is a film director and a big-name veteran comedian, performed this character of an old dude, which became a reoccurring gag in his variety program.

Space is a mighty fine place

It doesn’t matter how many times you fire your gun

Lines from Director Akiyuki Shinbo’s OVA, released in 1999. In addition to its contents, opening theme is from Geba Geba 90 min, BGM from Battles Without Honor and ********, and ending theme from Kogarashi ***jirō”, which makes the anime on the sound department too highbrow.

It would be embarrassing if friends gossiped about us, after all

Words that are still etched in the hearts of old gal gamer men. If your affection level were still low, and you foolishly invited your crush to “Let’s walk home together”, you could get rejected like this. All the Memo**al fanboys used this frustration as a spring to head towards a total victory.

Did a jeep just run past ahead of me?

(俺の目にジープは走っているか?)

From one of a certain skilled master’s direct apprentices, a famous karateka known by 10th Dan in Fighting, who used this phrase to provoke people who were picking a fight. Including “Wanna have the pleasure to take on a fight?”, he was a person with no shortage of heroic tales.

TL note: This text was for some reason removed from the DVD release. The line was translated by gg/Oyasumi.

Because he was a stupid kid

This line was muttered by the Red **met at the time he heard “~died! Why is that!?” from a speech on TV. When you’re scolded with “why” or “how come” in everyday life, responding this way has the possibility of conversely deepening your friendship (No guarantees).

The first step to an arrest is legwork

Unforgivable. No matter how long ago, a crime is a crime.

From a drama starring a police officer from Sōbu City Police Station’s Statute of Limitations Management Department (this station and this department are purely fictional). In this comedy and mystery mixing series, the protagonist solves the truths behind cases that became cold as a hobby, which has garnered question regarding show’s astonishing DVD-Box sales.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

“I gave Becky’s image a change”. Two connected belts, in straight lines from the coat to skirt’s bottom hem, are quite the eye-catchers.

Episode 23 Setup Collection

(Click to enlarge, opens to a new window)

Rei Tachibana (Blazer & Sweater)

Blazer gives off an intellectual atmosphere, while sweater feels more erotic. Shame that they only appear in Himeko’s imagination.

Misao Nanjo (Casual clothes)

Striking kimono with a showy pattern on a black base, paired with a mink shawl. She’s so lady-like and gorgeous.

Igarashi-sensei (Casual clothes)

Calm colours give her casual clothes a coordinated feel to them. Even in hangover, she has the pattern of not cutting corners with her clothes.

Combat suit

Super robot pilots from every eras and every places would wear clothing like this, to which everyone changes.
