A Wise Man Will Know When to Approach Danger

子危うきによらず

Script: Kenichi Kanemaki | Animation Director: Noboru Jitsuhara | Storyboard: Kazuki Tsunoda | Director: Yasuo Ejima

Idiom Explanation

A wise individual is able to judge in advance whether something will succeed or fail, and if there’s any danger. The meaning is that a person like this avoids things with danger and a probability of mistakes.

Hekiru Hikawa Check
Dash!

’s Himeko had a singularly focus on being an idiot and prosaic, so I thought this type of Himeko was fresh and interesting.

Advanced Learning
1. Text that Raises the Feel of Nervousness

In this episode, the time and location of each scene are displayed in extra-bold Mincho font. This typestyle was utilized in a big hit sci-fi anime that became all the way a social phenomenon in the later half of 1990s, which made font a famous one.

2. White Ball Filled With Indomitable Fighting Spirit

The ball fired from a pitching machine has flames burning in its eyes... It’s the insane curve ball of a man who appeared in a passionate baseball manga about overcoming adverse circumstances, which also got adapted into a live-action movie.

3. Great Gathering of Bow-Wows

After being called a dog, Himeko starts remembering dog characters from all times and places. Canines are a dog soldier, a half-demon from Sengoku period, a dog-shaped machine who fights together with Ya***man, and even a pet robot.

4. Awesome Eyecatchers

This episode’s eyecatchers, which appear in the end of both A part and B part, are similar to the style of one sci-fi anime that is being concurrently broadcasted on Sundays. In the Kanto region, there are probably many people who start their Sunday with this anime, and end it with Pani Poni Dash!

5. ”Talk like that some more!”

Finally, Kurumi’s concealed eccentricity has been disclosed. To have a thing for girls who call themselves with “boku”... Well, boku girls are certainly cute. But Kurumi’s drooling a little too much.

6. Primogenitor Electric Shock Girl

Miyako and No.6 wearing a tiger-striped bikini. When it comes to girls who release electric shocks, the oni girl who came from outer space is a pioneer in that regard. Darling, I won’t forgive you cheating on me!!

7. Ton Ton Paper Sumo

Despite Himeko’s life, as well as Earth’s fate being in grave danger, aliens are carefreely entertaining themselves with paper sumo. The sumo wrestlers here resemble Asashō***-seki, on Captain’s side, and Koto*shū-seki, on subordinate’s side. Maybe they had watched a live grand sumo broadcast in between of their Earth observation. By the way, this episode’s broadcast date was in the Tokyo area 13.11.2005, which was the opening day of Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.

8. Who Are They Fighting For

Chibi Rei’s clothes resemble the ones worn by the nine fighting cyborg soldiers. In the newest version of the anime that has been remade numerous times, several voice actors from Pani Poni Dash!’s cast appeared there as well. If you’re interested, check it out.

9. What’s With These Robot Wars?

Rei’s face comes to have something like an American football helmet, which resembles the main robot from the robot anime UFO Warrior Dai A**lon of yesteryear. Likewise, Miyako’s face became similar to a super robot who springs its arms and legs out with magnetic force.

10. Captain Loves Figures

Captain is trying his hardest to assemble a capsule figure as fast as possible. The staff and cast of this work really have a somewhat deep connection to this said anime, as one of its characters is a cat-eared cute vampire girl.

11. The Name of This Tree is Monkey Pod

A commercial-like video plays in the background while Himeko carefreely sings “♪Mahoohomahohoho”. It’s a guarantee that an average Japanese person has heard this melody, as well as seen the image of this large tree at least once. What’s even more shocking is how Nanjo Group’s subsidiary enterprises are shown here. It’s surprising that Café Etoile, where Kurumi works part-time, was part of Nanjo Group all along.

12. Horrorful Last Scene

It’s believed that after defeating Matango Alien M-25 all’s well that ends well, but there are countless mushrooms on Mesousa’s back... The last scene of the movie where the alien’s name originates from, has a similar feeling like this one. True horror has just begun.

13. Original Work’s Art is Moving!

In C part, Becky and others appear somewhat in the style of the original work drawn by Hikawa-sensei. It takes a tremendous amount of effort and work to make manga art, regardless of what kind it is, move like this as an anime. It’s actually a pretty amazing scene.

Development Study

Hate Hate Yay?

Neon Gene*** Evangelion -like direction choices stand out in this episode, and in the scene where Himeko shouts “Hate!” at Becky, few more cuts have been added for just a mere instant. Words lining up in a row on one screen -type additions could be seen in E*a... huh? Looking closer, there are incorrect letters mixed in.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

“He [Oota-san] said he wanted to use a kigurumi I had thought up previously”. She has the look of a fancy cat that could appear in a fairy tale.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

”This too was selected to me by (Kazuhiko) Oota-san. Highlights are her long boots.” Tightly dressed waist area gives the clothes a smart look to them.

Applied Material Explanation: Students of Every Class

Outside the main characters, even the so-called mob characters are somehow unsual in Pani Poni Dash!. In a typical anime set in a school, it’s often for the mob characters to have a bland desing, where as in Pani Poni’s setting, they all have the same face, or might not be humans at all. Let’s overview the tendencies among students of classes A to D.

Students who are attending the lesson in Class A are primarily scarecrows. Perhaps due to this the ears of rice are ripening.

When speaking of Class B students, it’s only Itou-san. Please understand that the backward-facing images are self-restriction.

Familiar CG students are the mob characters of Class C. On very rare occasions you might see other students than these ones.

Probably due to some ojou-sama’s influence, Class D is like a zoo. It can be understood why it’s noisier than an average classroom.

Look Back to Episode 20

In relation to The Way of Writing Pani Poni Dash! interview

Kanemaki As a joke by Shinbo-san, Himeko has had a mushroom on her head ever since Episode 13. The reason for that was revealed in this episode. Story about Matango Alien from the original work was included, and it was arranged to be expanded to 30 minutes.

-Where did the idea of changing Himeko’s personality come from?

Kanemaki We wanted to used the “Boku girl” joke from the original work. I think we were able to implement it pretty well. Still, Becky trying to remember good things about Himeko and only thinking how she was “so annoying”, is very Pani Poni -like, and I liked that part.

Ichijou’s Story Guide

A fungus has sprouted on Himeko-san’s head. Truth be told, it was growing already in Episode 19, and in other previous episodes, which had several scenes featuring most certainly a fungus on Himeko-san’s head. Incidentally, I had always noticed it, but it would’ve been insignificant to mention about it, so I kept quiet. Henceforth, this fungus is an alien that arrived from Planet Matango M-25, who by possessing Himeko-san’s body is plotting to invade Earth. Nevertheless, isn’t it a guarantee in dramas that at these times, the method to defeat an alien and save Earth is for someone to become a sacrifice, ergo, it would be Himeko-san?

Voices from our Staff

Noboru Jitsuhara

(Key Animation, Keyframes – 30 yo)

*ura **tt*er at the beginning of Episode 20’s B part was in fact animated by yours truly. However, it’s a pity how the antler and back parts had to be changed in various ways. C part had keyframes similar to the original work, and it’s all thanks to the effort of the animators that we were able to make it look just like the manga.

Director’s Point of View

Kazuki Tsunoda

(Storyboard - 35 yo)

The eyecatcher in A part and the end of B part contain parodies of a certain work that’s currently airing, and it wasn’t my intention to draw those in the storyboard (although I have a memory of drawing the eyecatcher as a joke), but considering how we actually were working on this episode’s storyboard at the same time, including the fact that Rei-chan and Serizawa had become more naughty compared to the original storyboard, I believe it’s the staff’s fault here (laughs). C part ending seems like a joke related to the voice actress (I didn’t know about that; thus, it probably wasn’t on the storyboard. Truly clueless, I am...).

Chalkboard and Telop Explanation

Titus Alone

This is third and last title of the Gormen**ast novel trilogy by British writer Mervy* Peake. In reality, several more titles were planned to be written, but didn’t actualise due to author’s death.

I’d swear this suit looks scared of me!

“Look at Lt. Commander, he built his career by winning actual battles!”, the invading Gio* soldier naturally muttered, as he gazed upon enemy’s brand-new weapon which stood on firm ground. However, even the person who said this seemed to be frightened of the white devil.

Because no one knows how to create a soul

A line that appears in the play R.U.*., by the Czech novelist Karel Ča**k. It’s a sci-fi work in which the robots, who were used as labour force, rebel against humanity, and it’s also where the word “robot” originates from.

Geronimo, who’s in a spinning-double-arm hold, is behind Robin?!

From the superhuman pro wrestling manga whose 2nd generation is still popular among readers. This refers to a situation where the person, who’s supposed to be getting hit by the enemy, is surprisingly watching the scene alongside with his friends, which in short, is a drawing error. Since it hasn’t been corrected even after multiple printing, it has become a custom joke.

Aniki isn’t referring to Adon of the others

In a certain peculiar, but manly shooting game series, macho men starting from Adon are the protagonist’s younger brothers, so not really his big brother. When it comes to our all and one big brother, even **tei has this vibe! (pop)

Segal vs Anthony

At the time when two game consoles gave rise to the term “next generation console”, Segal, who was fiercely competing for market share, created this commercial. The contents were about two monkeys called Segal and Anthony, who would play around with their respective next generation consoles.

Sakigake!? Otoko Yado

It’s originally the title of a fighting manga memorable from the line ”You know it, ***den!?”, but “Otoko Yado” (男宿) is a ryokan that appeared afterwards in an absurd comedy manga that was serialised in the same magazine. Depending on which one you remember first, it’s a reference to reveal your age and preferences.

Read? Or die?

Translating this (読む?それとも シヌ?) to English, it turns about to be the title of a certain work that got popular through its novels, OVA series and furthermore a TV anime. Based on the image he got from watching the anime, Hikawa-sensei decided to request Chiwa Saitō-san play Becky’s role.

You can cast Be**ma here. Turn the Indian to the right?!

Very noticeable misprint of ”Turn the handle to the right from here” (ここでハンドルを右に) as “Turn the Indian to the right from here” (ここでインド人を右に). From a certain gaming magazine that made a name for itself from all their typos that could be called artistic. Together with “Zangyur’s Super Uria-up” (ザンギュラのスーパーウリアッ上), both of these misprints are remembered as legendary.

I might as well choose these adventurous 100 shots!!

”A legendary adventure” is the catchphrase of an action game whose protagonist is the adventurer Edward **ndy. “Since I’m here, I’ll chose~” is from the gun shooting game where player controls the mercenary Kousuke Echi***.

That’s crazy!

Abbrevation for ”There is no God” (神も仏もない). This line appears in an overseas sci-fi novel, but the original text is “There Ain’t No Justice” (There is no justice), which was abbreviated as “Tanj”. The translator must’ve had a very difficult time.

Joe! Where do you want to fall?

The 2nd cyborg, who could fly through sky, asked the 9th cyborg, who had equipped Accele****** Mode, with these words. As both of them fall back to Earth after collapsing from exhaustion, children on Earth saw them as shooting stars... which is to say, it’s from an extremely well-known scene.

Powered-up (?) Mecha Dodzilla also appeared.
