Idiom Explanation | Accurately, its means ”Nothing is seen from what is hidden, and nothing is apparent from what is faint”. No one can see inside you, and only you know your own heart. The meaning is that one should care for the self-management of mind. TL note: The idiom is literally in Japanese "Nothing Is Apparent From What Is Faint". |

1. Lode Ru*ner Ichijou and her friend’s cellphones are full with various references and jokes. In the picture above, phone screen is displaying a famous game of digging holes and burying enemies. The phone carrier is “IEO” too. If you subtract these letters from “aiueo”...
2. Dwellers Under the Floor When Watanuki appears, there’s Lord Cat under the floor. After this scene his appearances in the episode increase steadily.
3. One Jō Yen In the mysterious town, which doesn’t seem like Japan at all, the wedding dress that Ichijou was gazing at costs one jōn. The numerical unit jō actually exists, and is equivalent to 100 trillion X 100 trillion. Even if you collected all the money on Earth, you definitely wouldn’t still be able to buy it.
4. Maximum Damage 9999 When getting hit by Miyako, Himeko’s damage value is displayed in the style of a famous domestic RPG. During this time Himeko’s HP drops to 16, and actually, this value is carried over to subsequent scenes.
5. Uninvited HimekoHimeko, who’s absurdly obsessed with crabs, gets hit not only by Miyako, but also by Rei, and says before collapsing “Excuse my rudeness”. She goes down with a phrase from famous comedy skits of the past. Don’t the small moustache she’s wearing suit for her?
6. Who’s That, It’s Himeko After getting hits, Himeko’s eyes turn into triangles and her face turns green... Are they the male demon and the heroine?
7. Elderly Couple, Once Again First appearing in Episode 6, the elderly couple who lives (?) at the school appears once more. In the background TV there’s Pani Poni Dash! on.
8. WANTED Roboko, one of the many roles played by Serizawa, has her ears featured in a poster, where it resembles a crab. Originally these ears were modeled after one maid robot’s ears, who appeared in a famous romance game. There’s also a graffiti reading “GGG” on the crab. Is it Ga*gaigar?
| 9. Become Sma~ll! Chibi Becky and others gathered together and launched an attack on Miyako, in order to make her a chibi as well. At that time Kurumi brings background-blending clones of her out to attack Miyako, but they aren’t anything out of the ordinary, which makes her sulk.
10. We Are American Marines! After chibi Becky and others leave from the screen, soldiers follow them in a line. It’s reminiscent of the training scene in the movie Full Meta* Jacket. There also appears a close-up to training instructor Sergeant Har*man at the end. Ever since appearing in ">Episode 14, it can be said he’s become a familiar character in this work.
11. Ichijou Quest The screen displays the party searching for Ichijou in an RPG fashion. On the upper left, there’s the name of a really old Famicom shooting game. On the upper right too there are lots of game references and names of game consoles displayed. Status of the party is displayed on the lower right, but as Himeko got punched in the previous scene, her HP is still reduced to 16.
12. Undressing Event? In the still image with Miyako and No. 6, there are the letters for “Hit H Button” on the lower right. If you hit the H button of a DVD player here, could you possibly strip their clothes off, similar to a certain mahjong game? (Impossible though)
13. Under the Legendary Tree As a nod to a famous romance simulation game that was first released on P* Engine, a boy runs towards a girl who’s waiting under a large tree. After this the girl, instead of confessing her feelings to him, she makes him eat a kick.
14. Miyako Stuck From Forehead Miyako’s forehead gets stuck in a gap in the wall and can’t get out. “Watch Your Forehead!” and such are written on the posters. This is an accident that can happen to no other than Miyako. And on the lower left, the customary letters for Convoy are once again there.
15. Ichijou the Third? Ichijou runs away while dodging bullets. She’s as fast as the great third-generation thief in his TV anime’s opening. Naoyuki Tatsuwa-san, who was responsible of animating this, apparently worked while pausing a DVD to ensure that this scene was recreated as accurately as possible.
| 16. Anti-Miyamoto Struggle Ichijou holding a placard and wearing a helmet. It’s like she’s a student activist from the Anpo protests. To learn more about Anpo protests, ask your father or someone from an older generation.
17. The Visitor From the Sky Becky and others have boarded a helicopter that flies alongside written letters of “baru baru baru”, but in the background there’s a distinctive bioweapon coming in with the onomatopoeia “baru baru baru”. Touching that means death! Right that! That’s Ba*h!
18. De**rean? Car’s insides are identical to a famous timeslip movie. NOV 06 1955 was the day when the said movie came out, and as for OCT 17 2005, it was the date when this Episode 16 was broadcasted. Since the car would do a timeslip when exceeding the speed of 88 mph, the speed is limited to 87 mph.
19. Wolf of Air and the R Sign The helicopter that the Principal arranged for Becky, has for some reason Giant Salamander piloting it, and on a closer look, it’s identical to a certain supersonic attack helicopter. Helicopter flying past a sign of “R” that’s falling from the roof a building is a recreation of a famous scene, which appeared in the movie Isla*d.
20. Magician Ichijou In the original work, Ichijou wears rabbit ears while performing a magic show, but in the anime, she performs the magic show at this spot. The tears she shows after that are apparently caused from hay fever, but only Ichijou knows whether this punch line is true.
21. Sign of Farewell The dried herring Alien Captain received from Ichijou as a parting gift, was last seen in his hands... In this episode, the story was a bit sad.
22. The Laughing Ichijou-san Ichijou, who became the club leader of Courage Club, has the figure of a salesman who fills emptiness in people’s souls. Though, this cut is quite scary... TL note: See Development Study below. Screenshot from the TV release, subtitled by Oyasumi.

As Captain in A.*.U.G. The scene where Invulnerable Bruce shows up from inside a car, taking off his sunglasses. It’s as if watching Captain **attro’s movements in the opening for the Z version of Mobile **it Gundam. In addition, Lord Cat flies in a dress in the background of this scene, which resembles a Newtype woman that Captain **attro met in India, when he was still called as The Red Co***. The attention in detail shines through.
The Real Laughing Ichijou-san The cut with Ichijou looking like a salesman who fills the gaps in people’s hearts was part of the episode every since the TV version. The colours of the picture have now been changed, giving a more decent impression of the scene. But still, it really is pretty scary...

Look Back to Episode 16
In relation to The Way of Writing Pani Poni Dash! interview
Kanemaki Episode 16 is one of the episodes I really like. I thought of wanting to make at least one episode have a proper love story, and since I was personally fond of how Captain’s voice actor Mugihito-san showed excitement, I decided making Captain a main character.
Shinbo Huh, wasn’t the original plan something like making an episode about watching and following Ichijou’s daily life.
Kanemaki So you were attached to that, eh. But since it’s Ichijou’s love story, it’s a guarantee that things won’t go normally (laughs). And I’m also fond of the Courage Club riddle in the C part. Ichijou’s solutions are interesting as always (laughs).

| Kurusu’s Story Guide |
Ichijou from Class C has been lately acting weird. Once she suddenly started rolling all across the hallway, and one time jumped off the roof. However, no one was worried since “it’s Ichijou after all”... but it’s still absolutely weird! Why are everyone so lax about this!? And then as a request from Miyamoto-sensei, we from the Intelligence Department began investigating on Ichijou. But I originally belong to the Film Club, so why I have become someone who helps out the Intelligence Department… Anyway, during the investigation, we didn’t see anything out of the ordinary! Ah, just what is... Eh? He, help me~! |
| Voices from our Staff |
Kousuke Murayama (Animation Director, Animation-related chores)
I’m somewhat relieved we finally got it over with. I believed it’s thanks to all the hard work of our staff that it became a flashy episode that everyone can enjoy.
Nobuhiro Sugiyama (Animation Director of Other Half)
I was able to view how small jokes came from straight out of animators’ hands, and thinking how “I would’ve never thought of something like this”, made working all the more fun. Please especially see Ichijou’s love talk. It’s a must-see as you can catch a glimpse of her sad expression. After all, she mostly has the same look with half-closed eyes on her face. |
Director’s Point of View |
Shin Oonuma (Director, Eternal 17 yo (But kisses are a no-no))
Gotta have a game screen at some point, right? When I looked upon the storyboard at the moment, I thought of trying it out with this episode. The visual image in my mind is close to SuFa**, but if this would really be released, it would become to feel more like that *a****n-era **ra*mon kusoge... ^^; . The number one highlight is the scene in latter episode, where Ichijou makes a pigeon fly that eventually drops, and in the next scene it’s washed away. |

Good Day, My Sister At a Catholic girls’ academy with a statue of Virgin Mary, which serves as the setting for a certain girls’ novel, this greeting is exchanged between students on a daily basis. Due to its influence, there feels to be an increase of people who use “how do you do” in real life.
