A Safflower Stands Out in Any Garden

紅は園生に映えても隠れなし

Idiom Explanation

Sonou (園生) means a garden. Safflower (kurenai; 紅) refers to the beautiful crimson flowers that bloom in the garden. In other words, a superior thing stands out even when it blends in with other things.

Hekiru Hikawa Check
Strong feel of comedy and lots of unbalanced pictures make the 2nd Episode very Pani Poni -like. The overall message gives a nice peaceful feeling for watching it. It was also a great story about Roboko’s first appearance.
Advanced Learning
1. Eye Sticker

The anger of Becky not remembering the names of her homeroom class students made Rei open up her hidden third eye! …is what it looked like, but it was just a sticker. Judging from the fact that this joke has come up several times since then, it seems to be a favorite among the Staff members?

2. Lord Cat’s Canned Coffee

Pay attention to the design of the canned coffee that Lord Cat is holding. When you think of canned coffee with an old man logo, everyone thinks of Suntory's B*ss, but for some reason the brand here is CCCP (Soyuz Sovyetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik). It clearly says it's made in the Soviet Union.

3. In front of the Rabbit Hutch

It’s the Lord Cat, Giant Salamander and others’ Animal Army March. Rather than that, I’m more interested to the bushes that are a blatantly set pieces.

4. Serizawa, and Roboko in development

Serizawa is working on something. It’s a scene where Roboko makes its appearance during welding development. …It's already going to be a total disaster in this episode.

5. GeGeGe no Kurumi?

Kurumi’s face has the same feel as the characters from the famous youkai manga author Mizuki. The pessimistic Kurumi and the somewhat lethargic touch of Mizuki match each other so annoyingly well.

6. The Brand of the Clock…

It’s only one letter different from the top brand Ro*ex. By the way, the real thing is not Ro*ax, the correct name is Ro*ex.

7. Appearance from Fruits

The Class C splits the fruit in half and pop their faces out. It's like that seafood family anime that airs in the Kanto region seven hours before Pani Poni Dash!.

8. What’s Captain’s name?

On the spaceship, the aliens start talking about each other's names. It’s well known in the industry that Mugihito, who plays the Alien Captain, also plays Captain Pica*d in the famous foreign sci-fi drama series Star Tr*k. Could this be a clue to discovering the name of the Alien Captain, whose name is covered with a beep?

9. So plain it shows through?!

Kurumi, who was told she was plain over and over again, came to the classroom, only for her appearance to become translucent. Does the lack of presence affect her body?! After this, Kurumi continues to become more and more transparent...

10. Behoimi’s appearance

Appearing from tiger’s mouth and throwing away a cloak is Behoimi. This is the same pose as the protagonist of a classic pro wrestling anime. In reality, the work became famous because a real-life wrestler appeared with the same name as the manga protagonist. You are a tiger! Become a tiger!!

11. Overheated Roboko

Roboko overheated in a completely white background. It’s the last scene of an exponentially famous boxing manga. Along with the death of his rival R***ishi, this is one of the most famous scenes in manga history. Stand up, stand up, Robokoooo!!

12. Comăneci

The move which Roboko makes after her true identity was revealed is similar to **at Takeshi’s nostalgic gag, which became popular in the 80s. Comăneci is the name of the Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in Olympic history to achieve a perfect score of 10.

13. Ke**rin’s Log Bucket

It’s the same Ke**rin Bucket as seen at communal bathhouses. It is a traditional bath bucket that dates back to the time of the Tokyo Olympics. It's easy to get confused, but Kero**n is not the name of the bath product manufacturer, but the chemical product. For advertising purposes, the customer’s name is printed on the bath bucket.

14. From inside the zipper

The punchline scene after the ending. The zipper on No. 6's head suddenly opens, and the letters for "Uhoh" (うほっ) appear from inside… If you're interested, try searching for "good-looking guy" (ii otoko; いい男) and "shall we do it?" (yaranaika; やらないか) on the web.

Development Study

Better off to not think about it

Ichijou seems to have come up with a way to cheer up (?) Kurumi. Each one from Class C seeing her off got pigeons on their heads.

Kurumi's Story Guide

Becky only calls us students with nicknames such as “Bookworm” and “Cowlick”. And of all people, she calls me “the-one-who’s-so-normal-she-has-no-presence-whatsoever”… I guess I do have those kinds of characteristics after all... I don’t have any talent to stand out in this universally eccentric people’s freak show of a school. I’m better suited to fade into dusk alone in the rabbit hutch anyway. Meanwhile, a robot from NASA took my place in Class C. Getting attention must be great…

Voices from our Staff

Hiroshi Katou

Art Director

During Episode 2, we were still finding our way around the direction for backgrounds. When the standard was given as “anything goes, as long as it gives a laugh”, I felt relieved. Did you notice that in episode 3, Class C's blackboard is slightly floating? That’s because Watanuki caused it. In the fourth episode, the text on the hanging scroll was originally supposed to be handwritten, but due to time constraints it ended up being written in a font. And in episode 9, the staff had fun drawing animals made from empty cans on the walls of the underground cave, even though they don't show up much (cries). The background for the epilogue was a huge single piece of scenery that the three of us drew, and it was quite a trouble. During the meeting, I was told that it was okay to draw them in parts, but in the end, I ended up drawing them on one page. As I was working on it, the image's size became over 2GB, and I was worried that applying a filter would cause the machine to freeze.

Chalkboard and Telop Explanation

Flip it 6 and it becomes 9

During one lethal move in superhuman pro wrestling, you can swap your position with hands and turn the opponent upside down, as in making 6 to 9. By the same logic, the number 8 remains 8 when turned upside down, but becomes ∞ (infinity) when turned sideways.

Stretch Stretch Stop!

These are the words of a hero who has been helping children by stretching out his sluggish body for over 10 years on a national broadcasting station in the name of education. Stretch your body to his shouts, count in a loud voice, and feel how your Stret** Power accumulates!

The First Battery Backup!

It’s not J*rv*s

Mirai Shinwa J*v*s was Japan’s first de facto RPG with a battery backup software. The truly first game in Japan with a battery backup was Mori** Shogi, so be careful not to get confused.

You are in rock!

Mapiro Mahama Diromat

From a traditional dungeon-crawler RPG. When the party you raised ends up in the "You are in rock!" state, you won't do anything but cry. "Mapiro~" is a word chanted by a mysterious magician, and is originally written as "MAPIRO~" in Latin alphabets.
