Hugging a Stone and Jumping into an Abyss

を抱いて淵に

Script: Kenichi Kanemaki | Animation Director: Hiroto Katou | Storyboard: Kazuki Tsunoda | Director: Hiroto Katou

Idiom Explanation

“Abyss” is the spot where water gets deeper. When jumping there while hugging a stone, even things that can be saved can’t be saved. This phrased is used to describe how doing something dangerous will bring disaster and misfortune upon oneself.

Advanced Learning
1. Even Today, Ichijou Is At It in the Morning

When Lord Cat is relaxing inside an empty can, Ichijou runs into picture with full force and kicks it. He then thought it’d be okay if he wasn’t inside the can, but the real target for the next kick was... The Destined God who was going to be kicked either way.

2. Rei-chan of a Chinese Restaurant

Rei has a part-time job at a Chinese restaurant, which is casually revealed by her having a home-made lunch box, which undoubtedly looks tasty. Photos make it look like a really elaborate lunch box.

3. What’s With This Angle...?

Morning!” costume has been placed in the foreground, while appearing characters have a conversation in the rear. The famous director of the widely popular series about a transforming red and silver hero, who’s still active today [April 2006], loved to use this type of an angle. Looking the scene more closely, the costume’s mouth gradually opens up. Could it have ill intentions?

4. Formation! Intelligence Department

Hibiki Watanuki seems to be the sole member who does any activities in the Intelligence Club, but now, official (?) supplementary members have been added. “002” is Akira Miyata and “003” is Yuzuko Kurusu. They aren’t new characters, but the fact that they were introduced expressly with status screens shows how high expectations are for them. On this day, they attempted to infiltrate the school cafeteria, where a suspicious meeting was taking place, and go through to investigate it, but Miyata’s bursting clumsiness made her give up. In the end, the plan was changed to investigate Miyata’s clumsiness. Intelligence Club, is that really alright?

5. No Matter You Look At It, It’s a Tanuki

Tanuki that came down from the mountains, and was captured by Ichijou. And immediately Class C members are ready to it... and during camping a Giant Salamander was okay, so they only think of eating when seeing wild animals!? Those girls certainly aren’t eco-friendly at all. However, the authenticity of the information about tanuki being plenteous with collagen and eating makes you taller, still remains unknown.

6. Pinched Mesousa

Mesousa ran away from that one person (Zula as the first candidate?) and is pinched in the backside of a vending machine, so upon seeing it, Lord Cat doesn’t offer any particular help and pinches together with her. Perhaps they’re destined to be connected?

TL note: See Development Study below. Screenshot from the TV release, subtitled by Oyasumi.

7. Perhaps a Lesson

Shu, who was appointed with Becky’s “kids’ lunch box”, gets tempted by Rei’s words and skips the class. He takes a comfortable nap at the riverbank, but then in C part that appearance becomes... It’s a warning to take your studies seriously (Right?)

8. Cooking Book

The cooking book that came to picture just before this scene was a decent one, but these ones have a slightly luxurious feel to them. Specifically, the ones called as “King Taste” and “Ultimate Menu”.

TL note: Screenshot from the TV release, subtitled by Oyasumi

. 9. Can She Do It Alone?

Due to Shu being there not anymore, Becky has to start making food on her own. The written letters in this eyecatcher look like the name of an educational material for young children. Well Becky certainly is still a child.

10. The Evil Influence of a Snuck Up Invader

The scene, where on top of Himeko’s head, there shows up a mushroom-like thing for one instance. This thing, which first appeared way back in Episode 10, is M-25 Matango. Already from this time on, parasitism has started getting a hold of Himeko!

11. The King of Monsters Also Used This

In the midst of Behoimi and the "transformed from tanuki" Behoimi striking poses as body doubles, the signature pose of a man returning from France in a gag manga with sextuplet main characters has been blended in. It was a massively famous gag all across Japan in the Showa Era.

12. Demon Sergeant Is Here

Sergeant Har*man from the film Full **tal Jacket, who has been drawn in the eyecatcher, is a character that left a strong impression with his many vicious insults. This eyecatcher too became a stapler for the show from this point on.

13. Smile the Witch Showed

Taking the place of Becky, who catastrophically can’t cook, Rei stands in front of a cutting board. She pushed Becky, who always relies on other people and refuses to cook herself, deliberately away. Rei, who looks after Becky’s growth, shows that her profile had a very warm side to it.

14. Instantaneous Combustion!

Ichijou took out ”a Military Cooking Equipment”. Military use aside, it looks more like a weapon than a cooking device. Thanks to this, it ruined an emotional scene.

TL note: See Development Study below. Screenshot from the TV release, subtitled by Oyasumi.

15. Not The Last One Though

The composition of the scene where Becky and other are having a meal resembles Leonardo da Vinci’s painting The Last Supper. The painting depicts the last meal Christ shared with his apostles before his execution, and here Becky is seated in Christ’s position. As a guarantee, it’s not Becky who ascends to Heaven, but Mesousa.

16. Fight! Intelligence Club

It’s a wonder where they got the budget for it, but Intelligence Club’s girl trio is currently on a mission with an early-warning aircraft that’s exclusively for their use. Girls’ battle carries on...

Development Study

Inside Faculty Room

From Jaiko, Hikari Nikaidou and Upa are once again appearing. After this, there’s a cut of her showing a peace sign to the viewers. Separately, there’s a poster on the will spelling the words for the chant of Mazin*er Z combining, “pilder on”, and related to that, “Photon Power Laboratory” is written on Saotome-sensei’s okamochi.

Boss, the Finger Points

In the TV version, there’s a fingerprint in Becky’s fingertip. In DVD, the mark is a picture with the likeness of a famous grandpa from a certain coffee brand. However, the hairstyle has become a pompadour, and the pipe he’s commonly associated with has become a regular cigarette, which are subtle changes, yet exquisite enough to recognize the original.

Aliens’ Meal

Captain and other Aliens are having a picnic-like lunch box, in a newly drawn scenery. And in the background, you can see the figures of a crucified God, and a jinx. Perhaps that’s why it became a place of bad luck.

Devices Turned Gorgeous

Picture frames and other stuff are now displayed through the camera operated by Miyata and early-warning aircraft’s camera. Then there’s also the text “There are breast-baring moments, too!”.

He’s a Pro

For some reason, there’s a guy dressing casually in a kimono without a hakama in school cafeteria. Appeared in the anime Uru*** Yatsura, he has the aura of a stand-up dining pro.

Oh! **key!

Oh! Behind Momose family’s big brother and others, there are mannequins resembling a smiling family.

When The Screen Changes Backs

Next up, it’s as if the ground forces who broke into N*RV are here. Wonder if there’s an EV* at Momotsuki Academy.

Wonderful Hirosuke

Hirosuke in a suit. He has just the same pose as one of the Magni****** Ten from Giant **bo, who can split everything in two with a snap of fingers.

Power-Up on Vending Machines?

A significant amount of things have been made to the scene with vending machines. Stickers have been added on the vending machine, Ichijou’s little sister is sleeping there, Giant Salamander is being dragged somewhere, and more. Outside the screen, there’s a poster reading “STORAGE - Ichijou”. Since “Keep Out” is also included there, the way how Ichijou uses a vending machine would be interesting to see.

But Mesousa Is Pinched There

Mesousa and Lord Cat being sandwiched upside down has been redrawn. The crampness and Mesousa’s squished condition are emphasized here more than in the TV version. Although not visible, Mesousa’s level of unhappiness has certainly increased.

Fishing Mesousa

Snuf**n-looking Lord Cat is fishing Mesousa. Is this supposed to implicate that Mesousa, who was just now pinched behind a vending machine, has been rescued? If you look more closer, the Lord Cat here is in different colour, compared to the one appearing in the vending machine scene.

Ascension Into Heaven

Zula and Giant Salamander are climbing up to Heavens. It looks like the scene in the 3rd part of a certain bizarre adventure where the Stand users of Tarot cards “The Magician” and “The Fool” ascend into Heaven. Looking at it this way, Zula and The Magician person have somewhat similar facial features. ...Huh? But does this mean Zula and the other one have died!?

Frame Exclusive For Nanjo

It appears later in the TV version, but here the gorgeous frame has been added and stretched on the screen. But in this scene, opposite to the fabulousness of the frame, Nanjo has inner rage towards the Tanuki.

Food Ingredients Are...

In the TV version, top of the table was cut out from the picture, but it became visible in the DVD version. This layout appears in the 2nd shot, while in the 1st shot, P**ner is on the table, and then there’s only a ribbon... Was she an ingredient!?

Military Cooking Equipment Powered Up

The ” Military Cooking Equipment” Ichijou brought into the scene has a visual power-up, particularly in its coolness. Did the explosion that happened afterwards got a power-up too?

Explosion Afros

The black spots on Becky and others have faded a little, and instead, everyone became to have an afro and the expressions similar to Dri*ters. However, the afro suits Ichijou really well. Speaking of which, the cake that’s in a location to hide Kurumi, and has Lord Cat on top of it, give out a somewhat uncanny feel.

Nerima Carrot Brothers

Standing on Kurumi’s brother, who grew roots, there’s a panda holding a carrot. Apparently there’s a panda at Nerima Ward who loves daikons.

Look Back to Episode 14

In relation to The Way of Writing Pani Poni Dash! interview

Kanemaki Episode 13 had Bancho appearing, with even more robot action. After that we had hard time figuring out what to do next, so we felt like having a small cooldown, and we made an ordinary school life story. It went quite well, and Becky turned out cute as ever, which is why Episode 14 is one of my favourite episodes. Also, that tanuki is still pretty cute (laughs).

Takayama But the original version of this story in the manga is detestable (laughs).

Kanemaki And the entire Intelligence Club makes here their first appearance. The members were from various places, but in order to show their full potential, we composed them into a team and have these characters stand out.

Shu Momose's Story Guide

Wazzup. Since I like food, I’m the one who makes lunch boxes for myself and for my little sister Kurumi. After all, my plain sister is not the most diligent type~. Moreover, I heard this from Kurumi, but apparently Miyamoto-sensei’s big sister too made a lunch box for her younger sibling. However, she’s often mean to her and made her lunch box something totally inedible. On top of that, as school cafeteria will be closed for a while, Miyamoto-sensei asked me to fix her lunch. Very well, since I have the advantage of using school’s kitchen, I’ll show off my cooking skills! Sensei, is there something you wanna eat?

Kenichi Kanemaki

(Turned 42 yo - Series Composition, Script)

The theme this episode aimed for was that since the previous episode went too much all over the place, this was a good way to return things to normal everyday life (laughs).

So, as there were precise requests of “We wanna see a scene with Inugami and Momose’s big bro” coming from the staff, that’s where I got the idea of writing an episode about lunch boxes. It’s a sight to Becky’s childlike behaviour and Class C’s team spirit.

Then, it became an episode about the formation of the Intelligence Club trio, and had an appearance of the oddly cute Yukino tanuki.

The line I like the most is “Miss Igarashi will now take attendance as usual, yansu!”, yansu.

Chalkboard and Telop Explanation

How is Myomoto?

”Myouto” is the name of the protagonist in the second game of a nation-wide RPG series with a title about searching a firedrake, where once entering a password, you can start the game in the strongest state under this name. It’s a strange name that’s hard to pronounce.

Chi*chikoore!

In the 3rd game of a popular sound novel series, this greeting was used in the Shibuya where the game takes place. It’s a game where Yōsuke ****zuka and Saori I*** (from Hoku***) make an appearance, when they still were no-names.

If it’s somewhere, it’s gotta be in between the dimensions

(どこにあるやら次元のはざま)

In the 5th game of the ultimate nation-wide RPG, this is the line that protagonists’ rival character once said. Even though he comes to fight protagonists several times, he has a somewhat lovable personality and is best in being one of the most popular characters in the series.

TL note: This text was for some reason removed from the DVD release

Singing is great

In this sci-fi robot anime that aired in 1995, and became a societal phenomenon at the time, a certain character says this line whenever he appears. According to him, songs are the pinnacles of culture created by mankind. Don’t you think so?

I’ll never let anyone drive in front of me!

This is the protagonist’s catchphrase from a manga about F1 races, where every chapter start with an “F”. There’s a sequel which features his son, who has a similar catchphrase, and it was serialized in a magazine from a different publisher than the prequel, but the manga volumes were published by the same publisher as the original (confusing).

I have konishiki on my shoulder

The foreign pitcher that played in Kamome-san’s Pro Baseball Team was moved to Gi**ts in 1997. However, he wasn’t able to pitch due to a shoulder injury and left that team the following year without doing anything. Along with feeling disappointed, this famous quote continues to be remembered.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

“I wanted her to wear a balloon-like skirt, so I came up with this”. Shoes that match the clothes with colours are also stylish.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

“I thought of a cutesy theme. This time I got to choose the colours too”. Ribbons on her shoulders and shoes, as well as frills on her sleeves add to her cuteness.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

“By having her wear a blazer, I thought that sometimes a uniform-like image would go well on her”. The large collar, as well as including the white shirt, give out a crisp impression.

Episode 14 Setup Collection

(Click to enlarge, opens to a new windows)

Igarashi-sensei (Casual clothes)

Not seen in Becky and any of the students, she has a calm and femininely mature style in fashion. If only she wasn’t a heavy drinker...

Hibiki Watanuki (Intelligence Club 001)

Since she’s wearing a uniform resembling a loose jumper skirt, is she perhaps concerned of her figure?

Akira Miyata (Intelligence Club 002)

This time with collecting data, she was responsible for the camera. Though, she made the screen shake by letting the camera fall down, so there probably wasn’t any good shots taken.

Yuzuko Kurusu (Intelligence Club 003)

This time she was in charge of the reflector board. In reality she’s a member of the Film Club, but from now on, she’ll be pulled into Intelligence Club’s activities.

Tanuki

Came to city to train transforming. Although she isn’t that well in changing her appearance, her Behoimi impression is spot-on.

Akane Serizawa (Hockey mask)

Just put a hockey mask on, and you easily can have fun cosplaying a mass murderer. Give it a try.
