A Demon Wearing Clothes

Script: Sumio Uetake, Ken'ichi Kanemaki | Animation Director: Yuji Moriyama, Hiroaki Karasu,

Naoko Nakamoto, Yasuhiko Katō | Storyboard & Director: Yuji Moriyama

Idiom Explanation

This phrase is an example of a person who may look kind on a first glance, but whose heart is actually very frightening. Also, since demons are always bare naked, this phrase can be used to explain things that are unnecessary and unbalanced.

Hekiru Hikawa Check

No matter you look at it, it’s a Serizawa episode!

Wonder if there were many people who didn’t realise that Fake-Becky was played by Sawashiro-san? Be sure to find Becky’s all disguises on your second watching!

Advanced Learning
1. Final Battle! Roboko vs Mecha Dodzilla

Serizawa playing Roboko, and Kurusu playing Mecha Dodzilla, it’s their life-or-death fight. The scene has the vibe of a tokusatsu movie’s filming landscape, but as two people are fighting, the action seems to be a lot of duplicating the standard techniques and famous scenes of tokusatsu works, including Godzi***.

2. People at the Film Club

Film Club upperclassmen, who were only briefly introduced in the start of Episode 20 inside Kurusu’s imagination, get a proper appearance in this episode. From left, stage manager Tetsuya Ootaki, club leader Maria Asou, and cameraman Masato Shinohara. It’s a shame they get no lines.

3. Series of Movie Eyecatchers

This episode’s eyecatchers insert many cuts of famous Western movie references. This is a Spi**rman-styled Serizawa, while others are related to The Ri*ht Stuff and such.

4. So Many Beckys

”Becky with glasses, tall Becky, one two three four in total eight Beckys!”, but if you’re not surprised by this fact, and rather realise that “Isn’t there one person too much?”, you’re one sharp fellow. The reason will be revealed at the end of the episode!

5. International Rescue?

During characters talking, the eyes on portrait paintings blink, which is reminiscent of a nostalgic overseas puppet drama show. Behind them is Miyako and other dubbing their lines.

6. Alien Serizawa Captured

Serizawa is in the style of a famous photo about a “captured alien”. But actually, the alien of that photo looks more like a monkey whose body and arms got shaved.

7. Little Kid Teacher Will Punish You!

After all the trouble Serizawa, who couldn’t perform a Becky class, tries to cover her mistakes up by dressing as a pretty soldier in a sailor outfit. Mesousa and Kiriusa are attached to her as hair buns, but is it because they’re name after Sailor **on’s pre-transformation name?

8. ”Now, erase me from this world”

Himeko, turned into the Test Type E*a, catches Serizawa and grips her like the 17th Angel. The conversation after this is also like inside SEE**.

9. Is This the Key for Victory?

Inside the textbook that Serizawa opens, is the 23th chapter from the original manga. Rehearsing the original work throughout will make one recognise every similar scene in the anime... but not always.

10. Why are ya flyin’?

Becky Serizawa’s class contents are full of wonders. At the beginning, something resembling fighting game command lines were scribbled on the blackboard, and as to signify Serizawa’s chaotic teaching, the blackboard too becomes filled with chaotic things. Does the picture here explain principles and such about how ***yo-chan and her friend fly?

11. Roses Scattered Beautifully

The beauty who dresses up in men’s clothes and is captured by rose thorns is called Os**r... I mean Serizawa. It’s similar to the style of the opening to that one masterpiece anime which tells the story up to the French Revolution, taking place at the Château de Versailles.

12. Cheat Sheets

The name of the operation, where Rei and others try showing instructions to Serizawa with cheat sheets, has the same name as a large-scale operation carried out on Year 0083 of Universe *****ry. Even so, the text flowing on the left doesn’t have the character names, but “Plain Girl”, “Forehead” and “Maho”, which shows that staff members are quite the comedians.

13. At other times she's!

Even though Mesousa was there, Kiriusa was too, Giant Salamander being bigger than usual, and No.6’s being with black ribbons, everything were Becky’s disguises all along. Didn’t Serizawa and everyone from Class C really notice it...?

14. Serizawa’s Wrath

Blind with rage, Serizawa turns into a Comma*do and chases after Becky! But the screen is in the style of the ancient game Fro*t Line. Those soldiers are so weak unless they ride a tank...

Development Study

Shaolin Swimsuit Show

Among the ones taking part in the Class C swimsuit contest, together with Himeko and others, there are the figures of people who look like they play football with Shaolin. Little before this there was a group of Shaolin Temple’s 18 superhuman-likes, which makes this completely part of ***phen Chow’s movie world. Sign in the background reads yet again “There are breast-baring moments too!”, which can get you excited, but in reality, there are no one slipping anything in this scene.

Poverty God desu nya?

There’s a cat on top of the screen’s table, and it’s the Cat Poverty God that appears in an anime about a middle school student as a god. The one who gave her voice to this cat, is Becky’s voice actress Chiwa Saitō-san.

Episode 21 Setup Collection

PTA

Like Nana*** Kamen, like Natio**l Kid, like The Claw of Sa**n and like **zo. Quite the old tokusatsu show vibes.

Akane Serizawa (Co***ndo)

Carrying a M16 rifle and a rocket launcher, with body in camouflage paint. She looks like she could rush into action right away.

Akane Serizawa (Becky disguise)

Serizawa wearing a blonde wig. Still, it’s cute how her curly hair sticks out under there.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

”I thought about wanting to dress her up with a stylish tracksuit, so this is how it turned out”. On this no sleeves jacket, there are three buttons on her shoulders, and two buttons on her chest.

Kashiwagi Twins' Story Guide

”Hi~, it’s Yuuma Kashiwagi”

”Hello, I’m Yuuna”

”Apparently, people from PTA came to observe Miyamoto-sensei’s class”

”They’re a bit late on the matter, but seemingly still consider a little kid teacher as a problem.

”However, Miyamoto-sensei’s whereabouts are unknown”

”With this the observation can’t be held, and Miyamoto-sensei might get fired”

”For that reason, girls from Class C have been trying to set up a body double”

”That body double being Serizawa-san from Class D”

”And that’s where we came in to do clothes and makeup for her!”

”By the way, here’s a question: Which am I, Yuuma or Yuuna?”

Voices from our Staff

Yuji Moriyama

(Director, Storyboard, Animation Director – Born in 1960, Tokyo native, birthday on one day apart from Director Hayao Miyazaki’s, and Capricornus with O bloodtype)

Initially, the storyboard was meant to be done someone else, but it was I who ended up doing it in a hurry, which was a workload that I started working without sufficient preparations, and looking back, I had no elbow room whatsoever.

In this episode, instead of producing it like Episode 13 which had my touch all over the place, I was persistently sticking it in “Pani Poni” -style and tried not experimenting more than necessary, but thinking about it now, maybe it would’ve been good if things had gone a bit wilder? That’s what I feel like.

This story was developed because the Director wanted to have Serizawa’s actress Miyuki Sawashiro-san play the main role in one of the episodes. In the parts where direction fell short, her performance really helped us out.

Despite that I was told the original designs for PTA officer characters were No Good, I still continue working on them, and I apologise to everyone involved in the process. Although it’s too late now, I seek forgiveness for my mistake.

Ah, in behind-the-scenes comic about the dubbing day, there was a story where I overslept and couldn’t be present at the place, but the truth is that on the day of dubbing, I had immersed myself in entirely redrawing the layout of the corresponding episode, and in fact, the start time for dubbing just slipped from my memory. Better to correct this one, right.

Chalkboard and Telop Explanation

Mongaron Hit-and-Run Attack

Eat this! Bazooka Channel!

Former is the special move (if you could call it a one) of a pro wrestler that has Momotarō’s blood running in his veins, when he transforms into a mysterious creature. Latter is Super Mobility Explosion Football Bastard’s special shoot. Both are from manga by the same author.

“Secchu” Language Seminar

One corner show from the internet radio program Pani Radi Dash! It sounds as if Becky stumbled over her words while speaking. “Secchu Language” comes originally from the time she stumbled while pronouncing “Massachusetts” .

I see it. Yes, I see it! Each drop of water!

From a work that’s stuck with “G”, of the famous robot anime series starting with “Gu”. This is the line that the protagonist, who, with the help of a shady German ninja, achieved a state of mind in stillness (basically meaning a calm mind), spontaneously shouts.

XYZ

They’re the last three letters of the English alphabets, but have a meaning of “No turning back”. There was a manga where by leaving this message on a communal message blackboard at Shinjuku Station, a sweeper with amazing skills rescues people from danger (limited to beautiful women).

Gung Ho, Gung Ho

From the Vietnam War movie Complete Bullet Jacket (literally translated) by a certain master of movie world. When asked “Do we love our beloved Corps, ladies?”, spineless sows will definitely answer. I can’t hear you! Drop your cocks!!

Don’t hate! Don’t kill! Just love!

The show catchphrase of a righteous uncle who appears and disappears like with a blast. Evil leader’s headquarters was at the manufacturing company president’s house garage, and the detective office that the protagonist has, was at company president’s guest room, giving the show a very homey feel.

Burn, my cosmos!

“Microcosm” (小宇宙) is from a manga of constellation warriors who fight for the goddess, and the powers are hidden inside the main characters. By the way, it’s read as “Cosmos”, but just like “the same move won’t work twice on the S**nt”, this is common knowledge.

Look Back to Episode 21

In relation to The Way of Writing Pani Poni Dash! interview

Uetake It was the episode I worked hardest on, but it’s still the episode I love the most.

Kanemaki It’s an unusual episode. I always thought Becky scenes would be voiced by Chiwa Saitō-san no matter what, but judging from the acoustics department, this time it was Miyuki Sawashiro-san.

Uetake Yet, Sawashiro-san’s Becky was done well, really.

Kanemaki Uetake-san had strong visions for C part since the beginning, which is why it was about twice as long. It eventually was too long and had to be ruthlessly cut in half (laughs). But at the end, when Ichijou looked back from PTA and seemed happy for other class members, it was something really nice to see, right?
