Art Causes Harm to the Body

が身の仇

Script: Sumio Uetake | Animation Director: Miyako Nishida, Kaori Kasuga | Storyboard: Michio Fukuda | Director: Takuji Kimura

Idiom Explanation

There’s a saying of “Art Can Save One’s Life”, but this is the exact opposite of that. The meaning here is that because of the acquired skills, one may end up making mistakes.

TL's note: Kanji “芸” means technique, art and craft.

Hekiru Hikawa Check

Class D seems like the main lead in this episode, but I believe everyone had their thoughts on the isolated Class C so much so that Class D wasn’t able to become the main focus at all (laughs). Jaan ja jaan!

Advanced Learning
1. Burn them down!

Miyako’s forehead beam looks like the way-too-fast attack from a rotten giant weapon. It’s as if you can almost hear Her Highness Ku**ana’s voice.

2. Be careful not to catch a cold!

Himeko in a happi. Calling out to the viewers with “Have you done your homework? Have you gone to bath?”, it’s like a live comedy show that starts on 8PM.

3. Everyone’s Height

In the mysterious institution, everyone’s heights can roughly be seen displayed not in centimeters, but in feet. 1 foot is 30.48 cm, while 1 inch is 2.54 cm, and to anyone interested, try converting lengths with this.

4. On the Walls of the Institution

There are various things posted on the wall of the isolated institution. Other than an anatomy poster, there’s also the posters of a robot that looks like a space runaway, and Bancho from Episode 13.

5. Virus Counter!

Secret gadget appearing with a fanfare is a guarantee of the all-powerful cat-like robot. This virus counter can seem to display how many times “hee” is said.

6. Cards

Each Class C member is playing cards inside the institution. Card designs are obviously the same as to the ones which appear in the ending, but keep an eye on the card transactions. Everyone’s personality is revealed in their facial expressions and casual behaviour. Among them, Rei seems to be the strongest after all.

7. Enraged Serizawa

Serizawa levels a huge hammer, which she pulled out of nowhere. Speaking of a hammer weighing 100t, the main girl of Ci*y Hunter was swinging around a similar thing, just like this one.

8. Gorgeous Frame

As a lady’s privilege, there appears a rose frame around Nanjo’s face. From this point on, it will move according to Nanjo’s movements. However, strings hanging from the ceiling can be seen here. It must be troublesome for the person above.

. 9. Hell something, Devil something

The hell and devil that Himeko imagined resemble American comic book heroes, who both got adapted into a live-action movie. The hell person is a demon’s child who has a human heart, while the devil person is a fighting blind attorney. Despite their names being evil-sounding, both of them are champions of justice.

10. Old Man Becky

Inside Himeko’s delusions, Becky evades all dangers in order to deliver vaccines to them. Remember that one movie about a duo of two old guys named after a motorcycle and a cigarette brand?

11. D**amca*t Fairy

Ichijou looks to have the appearance of a Reside** Evil character, but in reality, it’s the D**amca*t Fairy that Hikawa-sensei drew for a Comic **rty fanbook*. Even more, afterwards Ichijou imitates a fu**wa doll that appeared in one of Hikawa-sensei’s doujins*. Anyone who understood these references is quite a Hikawa enthusiast.

*TL note: The fanbook and the doujin have scanned to e-hentai, so be warned.

12. Old Geezer’s Line

When Old Geezer is groaning in a bagworm state, he blurts out “Jaan ja jaan”, which is Old Geezer’s voice actor Hiroshi Ōtake’s signature line from when he was playing in Ma**nger Z. Miyako’s guess of it being a “dream about when he was young?” might be half-correct. But furthermore, Old Geezer starts blurting out catchphrases from Momota**-Zamurai and Tan** Sazen. Just what kind of dream is he having?

*TL note: See time stamp 16:33 for an example.

13. In the Underground Cave

Beneath the school route Becky and others are walking, spreads the world of a certain retro game that still to this day enjoys a cult following. The main character dies if he falls from a height half of his own height, which makes his whole existence a synonym to weakness.

TL note: See Development Study below. Screenshot from the TV release, subtitled by Oyasumi.

14. As Expected, the Prime Culprit Is...

The source of Momotsuki Virus infection was speculated to be “an original, self-assertive and funny person”. However, Ichijou transcends that description by being on a new level of perplexity, and seems to be the one that became the pathogen virus.

Development Study

Momotsuki: Wild World

Trees in front of the school seem like painted scenery. It resembles the screen of a big hit social simulation game, released by Nin***do.

Momotsuki: Wild World 2

Backdrop trees have been added to this scene too. Furthermore, items and enchantments appearing in the game can be seen inside this screen.

Let’s Train Our Bodies More

Spreading beneath underground, there’s a Spe**nker-like cave. It was present in the TV version, but in DVD version it has become bigger, and has been made with more attention to detail than before. Perhaps due to that reason, a ghost begins to approach a ghost. He’s on the verge of death.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

“This was selected by (Kazuhiko) Oota-san. Thank you very much”. Her bootcut-feeling pants have an interesting design, having holes in them.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

”Since the theme was a woman doctor, I gave her glasses and a stethoscope”. Her black tight skirt is also woman doctor -like.

Coordinator's Eye with Kyouko Kametani

“The highlight is that less is more”. Wearing a white blouse with a ribbon on her chest, her costume gives out somewhat of a waitress-look.

Coordinator's Eye with Kazuhiro Oota

“I let my interests run loose. It’s the impression of a pro wrestler who cares for her daughter and shouts her name “Ti**aa!!”. He is the most suitable guy in the world to ride a Harley.”

Miyako Uehara (Tight suit)

Miyako’s doesn’t have an open chest area. Maybe it’s related to her breast size?

No. 6 (Tight suit)

No. 6’s has a design where it’s open all the way to the back. Quite bold.

Look Back to Episode 19

In relation to The Way of Writing Pani Poni Dash! interview

Uetake Since I personally love Old Geezer, I wanted him to get involved in the story. Hiroshi Ōtake-san, who plays as Old Geezer, is like a god to me.

-You really wanted to hear Ōtake-san say “Jaan ja jaan”, right.

Uetake I was worried that it might be cut out as unusable, but I’m grateful it got in.

Kanemaki Ōtake-san too seemed to be having fun.

Uetake This is my favourite episode, as in a way, I was able to write Class D as the main lead. My selfish wish was granted to me.

Shinbo After all, Uetake-san hates Class C.

Uetake What, I never said that! (laughs)

Inugami's Story Guide

Class C was temporarily closed from attending school. At first, we thought it was influenza or something like that, but it was, as Miyamoto-sensei called it, “an unknown virus”. That virus infected our homeroom teacher too; after he suddenly turned bright red and fell down, the kanji of “peach” appeared on his forehead. Even though we’re talking about an unknown virus here, isn’t this just too nonsensical? And not only that, but regarding this virus, “there’s a high probability that a group like Class D, where there are original, self-assertive and funny characters, is the origin of infection”, which is just outlandish... Just because we’re the same class, I wish they won’t take me as a weirdo like them.

Voices from our Staff

Miyako Nishida

(Key Animation – 37 yo)

During the first meeting with the animation team, I heard that people wanted to make a fun work, and that’s what I thought to aim. Together with blackboard jokes, I had quite fun working in the company. I set my heart on drawing the characters as cute as possible (but wonder if I can manage to do that…). I’m so glad we were able to produce a work just like this despite working under a tight schedule! I’m also very happy to have been able to participate, even in a small way, in this show. To everyone in main staff, thank you very much. And, thank you for your hard work.

Kaori Kasuga

(Key Animation – From the Center Generation of 80s Anime)

Overall, I was mostly concerned on the part I was in charge of, which were particularly the “jokes”. Perhaps they were related to characters on the outfield and blackboard jokes. In terms of animation, I was looking on wanting to draw characters as “oh they’re cute”, but… I was inspired by chief animation director’s smooth pencil lines and became to learn from him a lot. I was impressed by the hard work of every staff member, even in the midst of strict schedules that the industry faces. Thank you for your hard work. And thank you very much.

Chalkboard and Telop Explanation

Thanks to this anime, my test scores have gone up! (Anonymous / 18 years old)

It’s one of the scribbles that was sent to us by a fan. Others include growing in height, finding their lost wallet, clearing Mystery of Convoy, having their birthday increased to two times a year and such, we received a lot of thoughts similar to these.

Daaijooubudaa

(だーいじょーうぶだー )

In the program Ka**-chan Ke*-chan Gokigen TV, there was a gag* where they repeated this phrase while beating a trifurcate taiko drum. Later, a TV show based on this phrase, starring Ke*-chan, was broadcasted.

*TL note: See time stamp 4:13 for an example. This scribble was for some reason not translated in ADV's release. The line was transscripted by gg/Oyasumi. Translated, it means "Everything’s Gonna Be Alright".

I want to eat Pokute

Pokute are the creatures that inhabit the jungle in the manga **ré+Guu. Although their appearance is carried to surreal extremes, they’re edible, and are regarded even as sacred beasts.

I didn’t snap

It’s not pretty when someone pisses me off

Rather than being known from a famous pro wrestler whose specialty is lariat, most people would associate these lines to a certain comedian whose specialties are impressions like these ones. This comedian is good not only in para para, but actually also in playing pool.

You sure are an actor

Kue, Kue, Kue...

Alongside “Chonwa Chonwa” and “Chakorin Chan” that come after these ones, all of them originate from the manga Aa! **** no Ouendan, and went viral. It’s a popular work that got a live-action movie adaptation twice -nonen nonen.

Tsuyoi Robo

Name of a certain midnight radio program’s corner. Each time a theme song with different lyrics would be broadcasted, making it a very memorable corner. There are many else midnight radio references, like to “Kosa**n” and such, but it begs the question if there are any avid listeners among the staff.

I’m a monkey!

This continues with “I’m a pro golfer *****!”. In the anime, which was based on a manga drawn by A of the nationwide popular manga artist duo, this line is screamed before the theme song. If you ever are singing this in karaoke, be sure to start with this part.

Header!

When this header combines with two other robot parts, they turn into a gigantic robot which resembles an American football player. In Episode 20, there’s a scene where Rei turns into this said robot’s form for an instance, so please watch it as well.

Returning Two Answer Sheets?

Answering two answer sheets simultaneously with a pencil held in each hand is the ultimate technique that all test-takers should master. It was the special move of an exam combatant from a certain manga, who wielded the fantastic pencil Yotsubashi Hi-*ni

TL note: Neither ADV nor gg/Oyasumi had this one translated, as it was hidden behind Miyata.

There isn’t a single thing I can’t slice

In the popular simulation game about super robots, who appear at all times and in all places and fight together when unified into one, this is a catchphrase from an original character also known as boss. Many fans have fallen in love to the way he fights by wielding his overwhelming Zankatou.

Yuki-san, I love you.

Chizuru-san, I love you.

Yuki-san and Chizuru-san are heroine characters from their respective shows Space Battleship Ya**to and Chōdenji Robo Comba**ler V. Both works have a mascot-like robot appearing in them, who talk with katakana-like sounds.

You have entered a wrong revival spell

In past, when inputting a password incorrectly in a certain RPG, this message would be displayed. It’s the game where when trying to save, the line “Regretfully, your adventure log has vanished” takes save message’s place.

No. 1 stuffed animal suit expert in Japan

From Ta**-san’s and No**-san’s TV show that became popular, thanks to everyone. In the sketch “Kamen Nori***” Ta**-san, who dresses up like a stuffed animal every day and plays as a supervillain, called himself this.

“Use” -> “Look” -> “Strip RPS”

In a gaming magazine from the past, there was a corner where not only secret techniques were broadly introduced, but also fake techniques were mixed among them. Many children fell for it, believing they could play strip rock-paper-scissors with a girl that appears in a certain game.

Tokyoto Taitoku Komagata B**ndai Gangu Daisanbu no Hoshi

.....

Including “Fu” and “Koganemushi” on the same screen, all of these are secret strings that can eventually get you to the strongest state, which are similarly indicated by messages “Tsubasa & Misaki's goal overhead shoot”, “This is Horii Yuuji Enix Drago Quest!” and others.

Big Brother, why does Mesousa die so young?

This line appears in a Ghi*li movie that depicts the misery of war time (originally not Mesousa, but fireflies). Screened on the same day, a bright and dreamy movie featuring ghosts that only the children can see, creates an amazing contrast.

Be patient just a little longer

In a Fa**com Fairy Tale, released on the Dis* System, this message would be displayed during loading. Consisting a first and a second disc, it was a novel and experimental game where completing it required switching between the perspectives of two main characters
