人間万事塞翁が馬
Script: Kenichi Kanemaki | Animation Director: Minoru Tanaka | Storyboard: Michio Fukuda | Director: Takuo Suzuki
Idiom Explanation | It’s a phrase related to stories about how a runaway horse brings home another horse, and how a son who broke a bone by falling off a horse was able to dodge getting drafted to military forces. Meaning, you never know what will turn out good or bad. TL note: In Japanese, the idiom means "For every human, life goes through ups and downs and is unpredictable". Literally translated, it reads as "Every human is an old man of the frontier with a horse". |

No. 6 in love!? is how this episode became unique. But somehow the story pushes itself too much. In the original work, Igarashi-sensei commutes with a motorcycle, which is why it may have been hard to imagine an excessive punchline out of that. |

1. Himeko’s Lethal Move![]() Himeko Tornado Smash is a move from a tennis manga that’s greatly popular among girls, due to all the beautiful characters. However, the lethal move isn’t in the original manga, and appears only in the game version. 2. Try Harder?![]() Around overenjoyed Himeko, who received a solved crossword puzzle, there fly stamps reading “Excellent”. In the midst of them, there’s just one that reads “Try Harder”. Well that’s perhaps because she didn’t solve it on her own. 3. Scene of School-Attending Students![]() Seeing Otome and Kashiwagi Sister (as well as Ban) here is the only screentime they have in this episode, and they don’t have any particular lines either. For all the fans of these girls, please take a good look on them (as well as Ban). 4. Students Flocking Around the Car Outside![]() The majority of the students gathered near the car are brown-haired Ooshima-sans. Thank goodness they’re not Itou-sans. | 5. No. 6’s Profile![]() Aliens’ data on No. 6. From her blood type and zodiac sign, to her interests and personal motto, she has been examined throughout really well. Though, is the misspelled remark “Good girl of the Geezear”* a sign of a difficulty with intergalactic exchange? *TL note: Translated by Oyasumi as “good girl of the year”, missing the pun “よいこof爺やー” (Same happens with ADV's translation too). “爺” (ji), meaning geezer; old man, is pronounced the same way as No. 6 says "the" in her "of the year" (obu jiyaa). 6. What Are Old Geezer’s True Colours?![]() The true identity Himeko imagined for Old Geezer is a dubiously obvious American. His out-sticking bangs have a weak volume, and the shape of his face are different compared to Old Geezer’s. On top of that, how could she imagine such a tall figure to fit inside Old Geezer’s body. 7. Old Geezer’s Resume![]() Most of his things are marked as “Unknown”, and even regarding his gender, instead of circling a man or a woman, there’s the circle between those two options. Intelligence Club is known to unravel other people’s matters, but not being all that interested in their own school’s teachers seems to be a policy of theirs. | 8. We have Mc*ol.![]() M*Col is a Korean drink, popular among a portion of specific enthusiasts. There are many people who were fooled into expecting it to taste like regular cola. 9. Old Geezer and Becky On A Ride![]() Just why did Old Geezer and Becky go all the way to South Pole. There’s a cut where the car going full speed is fully visible. It’s as cool as the huge hit game series that has every mecha from anime history gathered. 10. Scream That Echoes Across the Globe![]() Becky lets out so big of a scream it carries all the way to space. There’s a similar scene in an anime set in pre-historical times, where mammoth meat is considered delicious. There’s a short scene of this mammoth in question appearing here, which is something many of you already noticed? 11. The Truck Driver![]() On a closer look, isn’t the truck driver who honks behind Igarashi-sensei’s car Yankee! Could it be his big brother or his father!? 12. Lastly, Behind-the-Scenes![]() This is the Midget Igarashi-sensei was riding in this episode. In fact, it’s Series Composer Kenichi Kanemaki-san’s beloved car. All the engine sounds used in the episode were recorded from Kanemaki-san’s car, in order sound like the real thing. This is how the recording session looked like. Development Study |
| I’m just a helpless baby ![]() Ichijou’s little sister is holding a cheat sheet in the background. Doesn’t this appearance remind of the girl with a tiger-striped bikini? Under the Eye Chart ![]() It’s P***nair again. A character designed by a person famous for his work with Dis**ea and other stuff. BECKY enters the room ![]() Anime staff appear additionally in the faculty room. Wonder what Isobe has done? Kotatsu on Spaceship ![]() In the scene with a hot pot inside the spaceship, surroundings are shown through a bird’s-eye view above. It’s a room set up for winter, but will the indoor antenna TV show anything on a spaceship? This time the highlights are the ribbons.” | ||||||||
Episode 11 Setup Collection | ![]() Igararashi-sensei (Casual) Given her status as a teacher, she can’t dress up in anything flashy, but all her accessories stand out in her rough outfit. Miso soup fairy Miso soup is said to be the symbol of Japanese breakfast. There’s a clever touch of Japanese motherhood added on the fairy. Igarashi-sensei (Casual) Her outfit has a retro look to it, maybe to match MG Midget’s classic car vibe. Old Geezer (Racing suit) This outfit is reminiscent of Imperial Japanese Army’s flight suit. Did he wear it during the war? Yuzuko Kurusu (Mecha-Dodzilla) All the used metal parts are well-made and realistic. The ribbon on her head is subtle self-expression. |
No. 6's Story Guide |
---|
When I arrived at school, there was an old British Midget convertible parked at the parking lot, to which Himeko and Rei were wondering “Whose car this might be”. I have had a chance to ride in that car before, and the breeze that blew through left me a pleasant feeling. However, at that time Media seemed to have seen that and went to ask “Was it your boyfriend who gave took you driving”. And then everyone started inquiring “what kind of a person he is”. The person is anything like that, everyone please believe me, this is so embarrassing~. |

Storyboard In Episode 11, No. 6, who’s an ordinary girl that seems to get easily buried under all other unique characters of Pani Poni Dash!, falls in love. Considering her personality, she isn’t the type who’d get pulled into a vigorous story, so I tried to differentiate the atmosphere of this unusual story from other episodes (it’s pretty cool how even the most mundane stories can turn out as unusual). In the midst of this lively episode, I’d be delighted if it left some impressions, but what did you all think about it...? And on a sidenote, I’m pretty fond of the giant chibi characters (laughs). |
Chalkboard and Telop Explanation |

Famous shipbuilder Mr. Cid has started growing scallions, for Pani Poni X development. Cid is the inventor who appears in every game of a certain great RPG series. In the scene where he’s at brink of death, he entrusts his airship, more precious than his own life, to the protagonist with the words “Hey, I’m just lending it” (from 2nd game). But you will be cut in half This is a line from the character that Hirosuke is imitating in Episode 14 (See Development Study). Even though this person is established as the weakest of *****ficent Ten the impact from his finger snap and the easiness to imitate him make him popular and top class. Since their formation in 1997, the band has continued making and playing heavy metal arrangements of anime songs. Eizo Sakamoto, a former An***m vocalist, has worked as one of the core members, but it has been said all the activity will be “sealed off” in October 2006. Spring, summer, winter!! Where’s fall? By Nakase From the words ”By Nakase”, we can tell it’s a joke offered to us by Asuka Nakase-san, who voices Yuzuko Kurusu. The character for “autumn” has been extracted here from the list of the four seasons, so perhaps this is a play on words “Where’s dull”? TL note: Originally the scribble read as “春夏冬‼…秋がこねー by中世”. Japanese language has a word that lists all the four seasons, shunkashūtō (春夏秋冬), from where this joke has been derived. The word play is that in Japanese “Where’s fall” (秋がこねー; Aki ga konee) sounds the same as “Where’s dull” (飽きがこない; Aki ga konai), which is translated better as “They never get old”, given the context. Mass X Velocity X Grip Strength = Destructive Force ”It’s horseback style!” On the right is the formula for calculating the power of a single punch, which was established by a quarreling yakuza in a battle manga depicting the fights of a boy, who’s father is the strongest living being in history. “Horseback style” is a testimony of the police officer who has witnessed this boy’s fights. Once again, I have cut a worthless object This is a regular line of a Japanese who is partnered with a certain thief of third generation. The famous sword he carries around can cut anything, but there are many things it’s unable to cut, like konjac as a famous example, others being a cursed ruby and an egg-shaped safe and such. Listen to my song! In the sequel to a de**ltural anime where Earth is saved by singing, the protagonist, who tries to impress alien enemies with a song and end the battles, says this line time to time. The robot he rides on doesn’t only have a face, but also a human-like mouth. The name written on the left side of an aiaigasa is that of a person who was a member of the former comedy group The Handers. He is famous for his Antonio ***ki imitation. Handers released a record called Omoi** No Nagisa, which was a huge hit. Enemy is 7 and Sky is 3!!! It first appeared in a war film by Kihachi Okamoto, but became more popular after being quoted in one OVA series. There’s so many enemies flying that only 30% of the entire visibility was the sky. In short, there are tons of enemies. An apple can be eaten in three bites. ↑ I can eat one in 2.5! By Rei Another scribble offered by one of the voice actresses. The one on the right is from an unknown source, judging from the words “By Rei”, it’s safe to think that this is something Satsuki Yukino-san, who voices Rei, wrote. It depends on the size of the apple, but even if you try your best, 2.5 bites is probably the absolute limit. Adrian! It’s the name of the protagonist’s beloved girlfriend which he shouts after his match ended in that one boxing movie, which got a sequel where they herd chickens. Even now, Michio Hazama, who dubbed him, has to say the line whenever appearing on TV. Joestar! You’re watching me... Right? A line from the main evil guy, which he says in the 3rd part of the manga about Ora Ora and Yare Yare. With the ability to produce a photo of any person imagined by punching a polaroid camera, he was photographed and for some reason, the photo turned into a video, where he spoke this line. Hell and Heaven!!! Let me present my latest (but not really) look to you all. In an anime where hot-blooded brave ones fight for the survival of humanity with their mecha, this is the lethal attack used by our King of Braves. He thrusts both hands inside enemy’s body and grabs the core. A little to the right! Go straight! In the final episode of Universal Century’s first mecha series, children who escaped the battlefield, used these words to lead the protagonist back to them. If you watch it apart from being a New*ype, you might not understand what’s going on. The representative work of that one toy company that once developed game hardware too. With this Erinaceus taking part in a lot of its software, the games this company makes have originality and addictiveness. Gorgom is the enemy organization, related to the dark side of righteous grasshopper man, and the line above is frequently used throughout his series. Are there still many people who blame this organization for all occurring inconveniences? Hideki’s Overwhelmed! Hideki is of course one member of New Big Three (is this the right term to use anymore...) idol trio and a star who got also turned into a pachinko slot machine. This line became a catchphrase in certain retro curry commercials about the love for apples and honey. |
Look Back to Episode 11 In relation to Pani Poni Education interview Kanemaki The car appearing in Episode 11 is in fact my own car. I had a sound technician come over to record its sound (laughs). Shinbo It really does sound like the real thing (laughs). Kanemaki Episode 11 was our attempt to see if we can create a proper drama story in the world of Pani Poni. We thought it would be possible with No. 6. Hikawa Opening changed at first, but then goes back to what it was. All the slowness and quickness are great. Takayama It’s tricky not to leave things as they are once changed (laughs). |
